DD = Destroyer
DDG = Destroyer, Guided Missile (2nd D is silent)
FFG = Fast-Frigate, Guided Missile
CG = Cruiser, Guided Missile

The only CURRENT class of DDG in the US Navy is the Arleigh Burke Class... which came out just after I left

I'm not sure why they double up on the letter D, but it stands for Destroyer, capable of launching guided missiles.

DD is the designator for a Destroyer.
G is the designator for any ship that carries guided missiles )i.e. tomahawks, SM1s or SM2s.)
