This seems like an obvious question, but I know from some answers I got on my last question there are people who believe that the U.S. somehow won and I really want to know what the reasoning and backwards logic is there.

Theres more to war than battles. This war gave us the worst reputation ever and exposed our government as a pack of liers. We are still living down what we did in Vietnam. That is why I consider it a loss.

Stop calling me liberal. You have nothing to base that on. I'm actually a conservative.

The military accomplished their mission. We built a protective screen and trained South Vietnamese military personnel behind that screen. The military mission ended about 2 years before Saigon fell. The US Senate cutoff funding to the South Vietnamese military and without replacement weapons, ammunition and other supplies it didn't take long for the North to overrun the South. When that situation occurred, there were no US combatant military personnel in country. What you saw being evacuated amounted to embassy personnel including Marine Guards.
That's what happened. Draw your own conclusions. Personally I think we can claim a victory for the military and a dismal loss in the time that follows. It is one of those things where a good argument can be made for either conclusion.

the U. S. lost their no argument with that, here the info -the U. S. fail to end lots of its political targets -the U. S. did not get help from the Vietnamese not even the south Vietnamese -the U. S. did have administration of a few considerable cities, yet ordinary the full united states of america of Vietnam replaced into below the Communist -And final yet not least the full objective of going to Vietnam replaced into to end Communism, some thing the U. S. fail to do as Vietnam is united below a Communist government. That here until eventually at last immediately Vietnam has a Communist government. No a loss a conflict is once you do not finished your targets. Your definition of loss of conflict is thoroughly incorrect, the British weren't conquered nor completely annihilated for the time of the yank cutting-part have been they now? yet they nevertheless lost the conflict. in basic terms like people use guerrilla tactic for the time of the well known conflict and gained against the British, the Vietnamese did an identical component to the people and gained against the country.

A war is won when one side completes the objectives it was originally set out to do, provided they didn't change with the situation. When the US left South Vietnam it was still independant and the VC nearly destroyed, however it still fell to Communist forces two years later. I call that a loss.
Personally, I think that if way stayed a few more months or a year we would have won.

No. If you read your history, the US Military was doing a great job in Vietnam.
South Vietnamese lost to the North Vietnamese in conventional combat.

Yes and no.. We won all the major battles in Vietnam, but lost the war..
The people back home grew impatient, cut funding and pulled out the troops just like Democrats are trying to do in Iraq.
I guess history is doomed to repeat itself.

The reasoning is that Nixon negotiated a truce and peace settlement while fighting was still ongoing, as we flew out of the country from the roof tops the Vietcong ignored the deal and over ran (their after all) own country.

You guys are so disillusioned.
You lost the war.
You started something you couldn't end, went in, got the boys killed, got the locals killed.
It was a huge mess when the troops pulled out.
Now you have another war that requires the Democrats to end it.
Republicans are such *******.
