"The time has also come to recognize the painful truth that traditional Judeo-Christian moral values of pain and pleasure in human relationships have contributed substantially to child abuse and to the prevalence of physical violence in Western civilization.... The religious system upon which our culture is based holds that pain, suffering and deprivation are moral and necessary to save one's soul and make one a 'good person.' The crucifixion and scourging of Christ are examples."
-- Dr. James W Prescott, former president of the Maryland Psychological Association, discussing awareness about rising rates of child abuse, in an October, 1977, magazine article, quoted from Conrad Goeringer, AANEWS 739, April 11, 2000, issued by American Atheists

Puleeeeze don't use Judeo-Christian! Christianity has very little in common with Judaism. The only reason you quote from our book is to "validate" your beliefs. Jews do not need Christianity to explain their existence or their origin, but Christians cannot explain their existence without Judaism.

Gee, issued by "American Athiests"; I quess they don't have an AGENDA OR ANYTHING.
To blame the moral values of Christian families for child abuse running rampant in this Country is silly. I grew up in the early 50's and nobody even heard of child abuse generally speaking. If someone said the term, most everybody would have to ask what it meant. I am not saying it didn't happen; I am saying that it wasn't anything like it is today; People respected each other, and being a Christian family meant just the opposite of what you have in your
"quote". People were generally decent, and certainly didn't have our men parading the streets in pink underwear kissing other men;
we didn't have the disgusting things or even the violence on tv like you have today; in fact, you were only allowed to see Elvis from the waist up on your tv set. Nobody was taught from Chuch that they should endeavor to be poor, in pain, cause pain, or that suffering a and deprivation were necessary to save one's soul. That a crock of ****. The fact is, that the moral fabric in this country (usa) has gone down the toilet, and the Christians and other religions are trying to prevent it from going any farther, but what do we find? Things like what you've presented here. Lies. Lets hide our dirty deeds behind a fight for freedom of this voice of God out there - lets get rid of the Judge, and then we can do whatever we want without conscience. Lets turn the tables and attempt to make the religions
the evil ones, and we can play the victims
who don't have any rights; who are being
force-fed this "God" stuff.
Well, you can hide all ya want, but facts do not lie, and the facts clearly are that as the years have passed, two things have happened at the same exact time:
God is being taken out of everything, and the crime rate, child abuse, drug abuse,
violence, children killing children, kids stabbing other kids for their nike's, people going into work and blowing away every one who is in the office, parents neglecting their children, children out of control, hey the list just goes on and on.
Say what you will, but I've lived fifty years and I can tell you that there has been a rapid increase in every possible negative area of society - and you want to blame the ones who are shouting the warnings to stop it - to look at it - to at least contemplate it.
But you won't. Why? Why not if just for the sake of the safety of one little child, why won't you even consider what we say?
Because those who want to do dirty deeds want to do them in the dark; Christianity shines a light on what is right and what is wrong, and you cannot bear that light.
Period. Thats what I think.

I do hope that this quote is wrong, otherwise I'd have to conclude that Dr Prescott was at best, incorrect and at worst, a real kook himself.

".. The religious system upon which our culture is based holds that pain, suffering and deprivation are moral and necessary to save one's soul and make one a 'good person'..." Where did he get that idea? I've read the bible several times and NEVER got any idea that "pain, suffering and deprivation" were either moral or necessary to save one's soul.

The way to save one's soul is to accept that you are a sinner, and so fall short of the perfection needed to be in God's presence, accept Christ as your Lord and Savior.

??????????
Have you ever read the Bible?
Being as Christianity is built on it's foundation; I would think it might give you a clear understanding of what we belive. What is pasted above is almost 100% Anti Christ.

You also know that in the 1970's there were published articles in Medical Journals talking about how homosexuality was a treatable and reversable disease.

Would you be saying here that you support that view as well?

I disagree. Appropriate punishment of children is not child abuse, although some do punish their children excessively and abuse them.
