We know that someone who is born with an I.Q. of 100 will never have an I.Q. of 150, no matter how many books they read, or college courses they take. Nature (god), not nurture (education), determines our potential intelligence.

Assuming the bible is true, genetic mutation was introduced with our fall from grace, so genetic diseases - nearsightedness, Down's Syndrome, Lupus, AND most types of metal retardation, are punishment for original sin. Had Adam and Eve not sinned, people would all be equally perfect and intelligent.

If a low I.Q. is part of punishment for original sin, it follows that Adam and Eve must have had exceptionally high I.Q.s (perhaps the highest.) A higher I.Q. would be considered "less" of a punishment.

Yet, statistically, higher I.Q. individuals tend to be atheists, while lower I.Q. individuals tend to be theists.

So why would god punish people who believe in him with low I.Q.s, and reward people who don't believe with high I.Q.s?

Last IQ test I scored 144. I am Atheist. Wish there were a way I could verify this without giving away my personal information. I don't know if I agree with the assumption that Christians are stupid. I think that lower I.Q. individuals are more inclined to believe what they are told over those with high IQ's, but there is that hope and fear that even envelope the intelligent people.

Whoo, there's a mouthful there.

Have you ever spoken with a child or teen with Down's Syndrome? I see more spiritual depth there than I see with, so called, intellectuals. Perhaps that is why Jesus chose fishermen?

There was a scene in the Hiding Place where Carrie Ten Boom is teaching special needs children about God. The Nazi's thought it a terrible waste of time to devote conversion practices to such because, obviously logic dictates, that one intelligent person is worth thousands of imbeciles. Corrie told the officer that in the eyes of God, one of those children would be worth more than any other. God looks on the heart, not the brain.

1 Corinthians 1:18-20
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

I have a friend, who has an exceptionally high IQ, and it took us a few days, when she was visiting, to figure out that she wasn't putting the shower curtain inside the tub when she took a shower, and that was why the bathroom floor was getting flooded...

i think the problem is, this is a leading question, where we must accept your given facts as accurate, and draw our answers from that...However, you don't give the statistics numbers that you use as a given, and, as the saying goes, "There are Lies, Damn lies, and Statistics"...

So, I think we can easily assume that your givens are shaky at best, more than likely false, and your logic, based on false premises is therefore going to be equally flawed, and that this question is really just an attempt to call "believers dumb", and claim "Atheists Smart", and veil it as a question.

(This also completely ignores the concept that IQ testing and rating is still being debated as to it's validity)

Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!

There might be a correlation between higher IQ and atheism because in general atheists choose to be atheists after acheiving higher educated. Science offers an explanation that makes religious explanation unnecessary. But this does not imply that theists are not as smart........I have a second cousin who is a genius......he was awarded as the top 4th student in the entire country of Pakistan and was sent scholarship offers from other countries. Atheists are intelligent people, I agree. What annoys me is when they assume that theists are unintelligent and act condescending toward us. I dont deny science or anything.......the fact that I believe in God doesn't automatically mean I am an illogical and irrational person. grrrrrrrrrrr

A person's IQ has nothing to do with their belief, and God is not punishing people for original sin. Sin resulted in the world being a different place than God's intent.

I.Q's really don't matter. It is what's in a persons heart that matters. We are all supposed to love each other, which is the most important thing. Some of the highest I.Q.'s in the world are people who don't love and have a miserable existence.

"Yet, statistically, higher I.Q. individuals tend to be atheists, while lower I.Q. individuals tend to be theists."

No, that is not true. Actually the majority of college professors do acknowledge a God, although they may not believe he is actively involved in our lives. My IQ is about 130. I scored 765 on the SAT in math. I know of people who barely passed high school that are not a bit religious.

A very complicated question, yet as with many other things, such as riches, talent, power, fame, etc. those things tend to instill pride, which is the biggest reason many turn from a love for the Lord. Those who recognize their need, first for salvation, and also for all physical needs are the ones who have enough humility to cry out to God for grace and provision.
