By all means, open the gift now. The person who sent you the gift I'm sure knows when the actual wedding is. Open it now and send a thank you promptly. Otherwise you run the risk of the gift giver calling you and asking if you received the gift or not, then it won't look very good on you. There is no etiquette that says you can't open a gift mailed before the wedding. Quite the contrary, etiquette says all gifts must be acknowledged as they are received!

if you're asking for proper ettiquette then it says that gifts shouldn't be opened until after you are married.
1) because if the wedding is called off - you can't return the gift, and you shouldn't keep the gift if ur not marrying ne more (says ettiquette).
2) it's said that the bride and groom shouldn't sign their name together until they're married, so if you send a thank you note it would be from the two of you and would be strange if the marriage is called off.
BUT! you probably aren't going to call the wedding off (i hope) so i'd say be yourself and open it early!! maybe you could send the thank you card the day after the wedding - so the people won't think you were too eager to get presents. also you have a month to send the thanks (if they give it to you a month before then it's perfect timing)
God Bless!

Open it and write the thank you. Thank you notes should be sent out 4-6 weeks after receiving the gift.

What a thoughtful gift giver to send it to you ahead of time. Open it, & thank them graciously for the gift & consideration, asap. Don't wait til after the wedding to send the thank you.

I don't think anybody would wait a long time to open a gift!! Trust me... I think you should just send the thank you and say something cute like "I couldn't wait to open this!" Oh else just send them the thank you note. I'm sure they'll understand!!

If you wait, the person will wonder if you got it or think that you are rude. Open it upon arrival and then write a thank you card ASAP. Don't fall behind on these!
