Usually a passport, birth certificate, state or government issued ID, college ID - occasionally a HS ID, a drivers license or non drivers ID will work - depending on what you need ID for (say, GETTING a drivers license) a bill of some sort or college transcript will work.

A credit card doesn't have your picture on it, unless its one of those new ones that you can put your picture on. So theres no way to prove that it is really you.
You need some form of picture id: passport, drivers license, school id, military id.
