Presuming you mean the one you carry around as opposed to proof required to get it, neither of the above are acceptable. S.S. number can be stolen with drastic consequences. Passport is not accessable for many citizens. Prefer: driver's license or non-driver identity card provided by same authority. Minimal data. No imbedded personal information.

It all depends on what you are going to use it for. Normally, any type of official picture I.D. is acceptable. NOTE: A Social Security card CANNOT be used for Identification. Anyone that does is a fool. It is only to prove that you can legally work, and get certain benefits (as long as you have an acceptable form of ID).... Read your card...It is printed right on it.

Depends on what you need them for. Jobs require state ID or drivers license and ss. To get into a bar you need a picture ID with date of birth. Birth certificate and ss for DL. To write a check, picture ID with current address. And it changes depending on where you are. Each store has the right to decide their own policy on what kind of ID you need, and they can change that as frequently as they want.

to cash a check off a bank that you don't have an account at....we need your ID and a thumbprint. (we'll supply the ink)
to open an account, we need an ID and your social security card. current address on this please. the Patriot Act passed after 9/11 made things very tough on banks. we must have your current address, and we have to have your social to open the account. please don't complain when we ask you to come inside to put your thumbprint on the check. we do all of this for your protection.
thank you :)
