Yeah, this is normal while you're still getting used to something being in your mouth constantly like that. I assume you have already changed to a shorter post because that can make having a tongue ring uncomfortable ( is that what you mean by changing to a smaller one?). Personally, I prefer the acrylic ball ends to metal because of the metal chipping at the back of my teeth. That and it seemed like when I had metal ball ends, I had dry mouth constantly.
I was told by my piercer to use original Listerine diluted with water to disinfect the site. Yuck!!!! I use the blue Listerine, undiluted, and I also make sure that I take my piercing out every week and I brush my tongue really well. I also take the tongue ring apart, brush off the plaque build up ( if any) and soak it in Listerine before putting it back in. I also have several ball ends that I cycle through, all acrylic.

Your tounge is going to naturally rub on the top of your mouth and yes it will be sore, it is just something you'll have to get used to for now. I would suck on a piece of ice occasionally to try and bring down the swelling of your tounge also. The same night I got mine pierced I got the bottom ball stuck on my bottom teeth and ripped my tounge a little bit. When you can start eating solid foods again be careful you don't bite the barbell, that really sucks and you will probably do it every now and again I still do now and again and it's been a couple of years now. Rinse your mouth with mouth wash every four or five hours too so that it doesn't get infected either, as long as you maintain it well in the beginning it should be fine in a couple few weeks.

It's pretty normal until you get used to it. Make sure that you have the shortest comfortable barbell in it, to avoid damaging your teeth (it will help with the rubbing on the top of your mouth too)
Acrylic beads may help as well, but most of the discomfort will come from the pressure and rubbing.
Do sea salt rinses 2-3 times daily, for about 5-10 mins each time. Listerine and other mouth washes can be too harsh for a fresh piercing, so I recommend you use them sparingly, if at all. Absolutely no products with peroxide in them!
Be sure to avoid all oral contact with others (kissing, oral sex) for at least 8 weeks.
Other than that, sick to your normal dental hygiene routine.

Sometimes. You could be inadvertantly sucking on it while you sleep. Try a poly ball instead of the metal one-but you want to stay with the 8gauge size barbell. What I did was got the smaller barbell at Walmart($5!) because it had 3 poly balls that fit on the 8 gauge barbell just fine. I think it isn't as harsh as the metal ball. If you didn't at the beginning, even now would be okay to get glyoxide(an oral peroxide gel) to apply on the site of the peircing twice a day. It really really speeds up the healing process. Mine was good after only 2 weeks, and normally, without it-it can take as long as 2 months to heal.

yes, it's normal. tongue and lip rings are so sexy, but they will damage your gums and the roof of your mouth. If you keep it in for many years and the inside of your mouth becomes very damaged, you will have to get surgery done. Also, you're not used to having a peircing there so your mouth is not used to it. I have a friend with a lip peircing, she's had it for 3 years, and she still complains about it hurting her gums. When having your tongue peirced, it is best to use a non-metal ring.
Here are some sites that talk about tongue peircings:

You're just getting used to it..
Changing from the metal balls to the acrylic balls could do you wonders, too... The metal balls tore up my teeth and put pressure on the roof of my mouth.
Also, I have no idea what "8g post" that person up there was talking about. If you buy a new tongue ring, and you got it pierced at standard size, it was only 14g. :P

Its normal, but it can also be problematic to your oral health.
Hopefully with a downsize in jewelry the problem will go away and dental acrylic jewelry can help greatly, but if the pain persists or gets worse, I strongly recommend taking out the piercings.

is it possible there is just still some swelling in your mouth? Did the first one rub? if not maybe think about swopping them again until you find a new one.
