Generally speaking, yes. If you compose well so that you won't have to crop the image, you will be quite satisfied.
However... Buy a decent brand of camera. In the 5 MP range, there are a lot of cameras out there that are pure junk. Check out the camera you are interested in buying on http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ If they don't list it, it's probably not worth considering.

5 megapixels is the point at which a digital sensor starts to match the quality of 35mm film. As long as you don't need to crop your shots too much, you will find them very presentable. Professionals can even make good looking enlargements out of 5 MP photos, so yes 5MP is fine.
