When a dog drags her butt all over the ground, is it that it's just itchy or a sign of worms?

Your dog needs it's anal glands expressed. They have little sacs on either side if thier anus. They usually express themselves when the dog has a bowel movement, but if they don't, they can become swollen and irritated. You should take your dog to the vet and have them express her anal glands. It's a quick procedure, and usually only costs 10 - 15 dollars.

It can be worms or itchy or sometimes anal gland problems for which you see the vet and believe it or not, sometimes they just like how it feels. If it happens a lot then have the vet check her out for the two obvious vet type problems. If it's worms don't rely on the over the counter medications because they are not formulated to clean out specific types of worms. The vet will have the best medication to tend to the problem.
Oh, there is one more thing that can cause them to scoot. She might have poop stuck to her behind, you'd be surprised what sticks to the little hairs.

I've been told it can be a problem with the anal glands, which have the scent of the dog in them and they secrete a bit of it each time they poop to mark thier territory.

However these glands can get infected or need to be cleaned out ("expressed") most groomers can do this. Or you can research doing it yourself. (I have my groomer do it.)

I would have a look at her bum, make sure there is no puss, redness, sores or infection. If she is trying to get to her bum to itch it alot or is whining as doing these things she is probably in discomfort and it is worth checking out with your vet.

It's marking their scent on your carpet. If it happens more than normal, check your dogs stool- your vet can also de a fecal sample or check for irritation. More than likely though, just marking her territory.

I normally stop my dog because I think she's wiping her butt, like after she does her little duties...
