I don't know about a bassoon getting you into college, but good grades in high school or junior college certainly will.

Bassoon College Scholarships

LOL - why does everybody associate this question with the bassoon? Sorry, it's just my friend and I were talking about this yesterday - her parents told her to play it (even though she wanted to play sax) because it'd help her get in or get scholarships. For her, it backfired she says; she hated it and quit and then didn't have any instrument to help her get in! (Not that she needed it... she's a genius :)
My other friend though... exact same scenario, but she loved it. I think her bassoon-playing IS something shiny on her resume. It would certainly be easier to get into a symphony or something if a bassoon player wanted to go professional.
On the downside - that instrument is a heavy mother. If you decide to take it up, hope you got strong arms!
Whatever you choose, I think you should go by what you like, not by what'll look good on the college apps. Good luck to you!

The bassoon is much more expensive to procure and maintain, and is not nearly as popular in the normal high school setting, but in the end it is your talent that will get you into College. Whatever instrument you choose, will require a certain amount of proficiency to gain you entrance into those hallowed halls. If you are a great sax player, then sax will get you into College. If you are a mediocre Bassoon player, it's still only going to get you into the second group and you are going to end up playing sax in the marching band anyway because almost nobody wants to march with a bassoon!

Your odds on getting a scholarship on bassoon are higher than on the other woodwinds. However, you still have to be a good player. The scholarship is easier to get because there is less competition. But, also keep in mind that schools don't need to have a lot of bassoons so they'll only want ones that show true potential.

I personally play bassoon but it doesn't help tremendously. All the bassoon does to help is to draw attention to yourself because not many people play it. However, as with any instrument, you would need to practice a lot for it to actually help you. One thing, though, there is less competition.

depends on your skill level and if you intend to play in the band, or if u use it to get scholarships.
yes, colleges will want bassoon more than sax, and bassoon may get u a lucrative scholarship b/c of its rarity.
