The manner in which your body metabolizes the meds is key, along with the weight you were at before you started. Sometimes the smaller you are when you begin the med, the more weight you can gain. Lexapro? That should not cause weight gain. Wellbutrin should not as well. But, it all goes back to your body and if your improved mood may be attributed to eating more. It is a holistic process in staying healthy in all dimensions. Talk to your doctor about alternative meds to try and your issues with weight gaine.

Everyone is different, so you'll have to work with a doctor to figure out which particular antidepressant takes care of the depression AND keeps you from gaining weight. For me Effexor XR has kept me at a stable weight (no gain or loss), but that's just me.

Difficult question, partly because depression tends to produce weight loss. Thus treatment of depression often causes weight gain. Many antidepressants do mention weight gain, but it may partly be due to the comment above. Most of them anyway tend to put it low on the list.
Looking at all the commonly used drugs : Only Prozac and Zispin list weight gain
Cipralex,Lustral ,Paroxetine, suggest loss of weight or loss of appetite
Efexor XL,Lofepramine,Molipaxin Make no comment.
Hope this is helpful

Anti-depressants don't make you gain weight. Putting unhealthy food in your mouth and swallowing it makes you gain weight. It is a choice you can make for yourself.
Being depressed, unmotivated and worried can all cause overeating and comfort eating. As can not getting enough sleep and an unbalanced diet poor in nutrition. Anti-depressants can stimulate your appetite but if you eat healthily there's no reason why you should put on weight.
Take more excercise. Physical exercise releases endorphins (happy chemicals) in the brain which is also what the anti-depressants are helping with. It will also use up the extra calories.
Ask to see the healthy lifestyle or wellness nurse at your GP's surgery.

the antidepressants which dont make you gain weight are the ones which you dont take. not being cheeky but its best if you start doing some exercise to raise your seotonin levels rather than drugs even if you begin by walking even if its in the dark at first.exercise is the best form of antidepressant i know ive been there start running / walking do some weight this will make you look and feel great about yourself permanently and you will be healthier and live a longer life drugs rot your insides and will make you worse it only releives the situation it doesnt get rid of it.so once you start to exercise you will begin to see all your problems and tackle them with a more positive approach. please give it a try i know its hard but if you just give yourself that wee push it can work. my thoughts are with you dont do the drugs babe. xxx

its not the anti depressants that make you gain weight its the comfort eating that depressed people do. stay away from the fridge, choc, and get out and walk off the depression.. fresh air and excercise is better than damn pills anyhow

Effexor made me gain a little weight, but it has also worked best fo my anxiety and depression. I have been on celexa, zoloft and prozac as well and those didn't cause me to gain weight.

Prozac doesn't make you gain weight but you have to be careful of the ones that sedate you as they tend to make people gain weight.`

I have made good experiences with Fluoxetine, which is basically Prozac, but I can imagine that the reason was more likely that it made me more active again and I ended up even loosing weight.
