I have naturally straight hair (long to half my back) but it is not silky and sometimes it just looks awful, should I use the iron? I don't want to spend 30 or 40 minutes every morning trying to have my hair done. What can I do to make it look better? Any suggestions?

It shouldn't talke that long if you have naturally straight hair you probably don't and have semi-wavy hair or something. Get a Sedu or a GHD it will do it in less than 20 min. and it will make stay straight for a really long time.

You can also do this:
Mix some white vinegar in with some water. Apply the white vinegar and water into your hair. Wait at least 5-10 minutes. Rinse the white vinegar well under the shower. Dry your hair.

Cut some layers into your hair so it will look cute whether you spend a lot of time styling it or let it look natural.

Figure out why it looks awful (frizz? split ends? too dry? too flat? too oily?) and do some damage control. Buy a shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Buy some styling products that will help you achieve your look or overcome your problems. A good, silicone hair serum (like Frizz Ease) will also help your hair look silkier.

If you are considering cutting it please consider donating it to "locks of love". I did this several years ago it was very rewarding.
I would say talk to a professional about what type of product you can put on it to make it smooth and silky. When my hair was that long I just used Suave shampoo and conditioner every day and let my hair air dry. It was very healthy and smooth.

i have a little wave and frizz to my hair and i use a ceramic flat iron by vidal sassoon and i get compliments on how silky and shiny my hair looks so try that. it doesn't takes me 15mins top to straighten my hair and the iron heats up really fast, i used to not even use product in my hair but now i do just to protect it.

You should try a light weight hair cream. Dove it light for straight hair and Biosilk is great for any hair. Biosilk is my favorite. It also gives your hair a little shine. Hope that helps.
