Chickens can fly, and very well if not domesticated and over fed so that they fatten up fairly quickly. If a chicken were wild it would be as normal as any other bird, and would be leaner also.

Most breeds of chicken can fly in that they can gain height, its not just about controlling a fall as in the first answer. Birds like Anconas or Cream Leg Barrs can fly about 30 feet / 6feet off the ground. More if they are motivated by Mr. Fox i suppose. We had a Rhoade Island Red up on the apex of our house roof this summer, i don't suppose she went up the stairs and climbed out of the window so she must be able to fly up to 30 feet high in one go. Not sustained flight but the 13 second "fact" above seems way off the mark from my experience. Trust me, i'm a chicken, i know this stuff.

They can fly but they're heavy enough that it's a taxing event so they don't go far or very high. Most chicken breeds have been selected for their large bodies or heavy egg output - both of which are not ideal for flight.

Chickens can fly, but only a very small height. Most people clip thier chickens wings so they cannot escape. The clipping process is just simply cutting off some of the flight feathers. The owners just dont want them to fly. Hope this helps! -Jasmyn

Contra chickens can fly, not as well as other fowl, but they can fly. A chicken that can't fly ether has it's wings clipped or is a very fat chicken.

Chickens don't have enough thrust. Like their feathers aren't strong enough and aren't very durable. Like if you see a robbin they have alot of feathers and are tiny and their wings are strong enough to hold themselves up. Like a dancer, they can balance their bodies on their feet. All body weight.

They can, people just usually clip they're wings on one side down a little bit to make them unbalanced when they fly. So they just don't.

They can fly, just not very far. Not sure why.
I know they really can fly though, because I have had them and when they keep flying out of where you are keeping them, sometimes you have to clip their wings.
