lol I'm sometimes like that too. Well, if you're religious, then we originalally did speak one language, but then God got mad at the Babylonians (so blame them) and broke the language at the tower.

If you're not: the "original" group of a culture eventually broke off and took what little semblance of language it had with it until they either transformed it, or they assimilated with other groups and mixed their languages. You can see this in Spanish: it's a mix of Latin (because of Rome), Arabic (because of the Moors), and some other languages (Visigoths and the like in Spain, and some Maya and Aztec in Mexico) because of the old term "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em."

there have been attempts to create a world language: esperanto. look it up. but i think english is the closest we'll ever get to that. people are protective of their languages because it's so tied into the culture and heritage. for example: hawai'ian has like 15 words for different types of waves. english doesn't have that.

there is a language that all languages sprang from, but it's long dead. kind of how the romance languages sprang from latin, but farther back.

hehe well according to the Bible, at one point we did!! but people were doing evil and trying to get into heaven by building a tower into heaven and so God decided to change the languages to disperse the people all throughout the world.

Languages evolve and diverge in a slightly similar way to living organisms.
