i know it sounds stupid asking but i have a totally awful sore throught..what can help?

If it hurts so terribly bad that you can't swallow, you may have strep. If you're feeling achy, if your throat has white patches on it, and you have a fever, you most likely do have strep. In that case, you need to see a doctor.

This is what works for some people: put 1/4 tsp salt in a cup of warm water and gargle. Take tylenol or ibuprofen to ease the pain. Sip on cool liquids to diminish the swelling. If a cough medicine like Delsym doesn't help slow down your coughing, you may need something with codeine, and only your doctor can prescribe that.

If it feels as bad tomorrow, and you don't have cold symptoms, which would mean this throat is probably the start of a cold, go to see your doc or to an Urgent Care clinic. Good luck!

Your sinuses are draining into the back of your throat. Gargle with warm salt water as needed, about 1 tsp salt mixed up well in 1 cup warm water. Call your Dr for a Rx that will help dry up your sinuses due to allergies or cold.

Could you possibly have strep? I know strep isn't necessarily associated with cough, but you could also have a cold along with. Check with your doctor. If it's as simple as sinus drainage, then your other answers might be sufficient. But if you have strep, you will probably need to go on an antibiotic to clear it up. I had strep a couple times in my life -- hurts like crazy! Can't even swallow!!!
