Yes, according to several sociologists and psychologists, humans have a very high need for affection and belonging. According to Maslow, only second to the needs which keep us living is belonging. To feel belonging we need to felt desired, accepted, and appreciated. If a person should lack physical contact, they can feel unappreciated, possibly worthless depending on how long the lack of contact has occurred. It is VERY important that people feel needed, without it its obvious a person can become depressed. This goes for a person of any age.

Actually, I have found that depression causes the lack of physical contact in adults. At least that's how it is for me. When I get depressed, I don't want to leave my house.. "lack of physical contact with adults" Hope this helps!

Yep, just as it was shown in the babies that lack contact. Now mind you there are some adults who want to be Hermits but they need it and probably want it but won't admit it. Studies have shown persons with deblitating illness and have support live a little longer than someone who doesn't have family or friend support.
So here's your hug for today

I know it can happen because I live near the arctic circle i n a remote area. I feel great in summer when we have tourists, but winter can be lonely. All situations are diffirent. I used to live in california and I used to be a real loner because of too many people. But living near the North Pole made me appreciate the great folks near me. I trust my neighbors with my life, unlike the south. But i still have friends from back home and they love the winter here. They wonder how i can handle it.

I know if i don't shake hands with someone or give hugs to my friends and family, I don't feel like a complete person. Physical contact is part of interaction with people and if u don't get any, then it can effect how u feel about yourself and others.

Yes, I believe so. Everyone needs physical contact with other human beings to sustain well-being. Hugs are very important.

I've been isolated for so long, longing for the warmth of human touch, I'd say yes. Im in a single man remote research camp in Siberia, and even through this wall of ice I can see you. Am I nuts? I think so.

It could certainly contribute to it, but I doubt that it would be the sole cause.
