You have a 9 year old brother you say? Are you sure he knows how to be kind and gentle with a dog? You don't want the dog to get hurt!
And you want a dog that likes to be held? Dogs are like people, even if each breed has some temperment, they are individuals. Some are more shy, more outgoing, more cuddly or more independent. It is possible that you will pick a dog that doesn't like to be held, what will you do then? Or you might have a dog that likes to be held, but not all the time.
I have a maltese and he does love to cuddle, and malteses are said to be more calm and more sturdy dogs than the others you list.
Where are you going to get this dog? Have you thought about adopting from a local shelter? There are lots of dogs there that need homes, they might not be perfect purebreeds but they are cute. See if you can get mom and dad to take you to the shelter instead of buying a new puppy.
Someone on here seems to be under the impression Maltese are bad for people with allergies, but most science points to the converse of this. Malteses are considered by many as one of the best breeds for someone with allergies!

I would say either a maltese or a **** tzu. The smaller the dog the worse they usually are with kids but, then it also depends on how old the kids are. Most small dogs like poms or chihuahuas don't like being grabbed quickly or hugged realy hard. A **** tzu and a bigger maltese a much larger and can usually handle kids a lot better. If it were my choice personally i would definitely go with a larger dog. My family and I have adopted 3 greyhound and they have been living in my house for 4+ years. They are perfect for kids because they do have that need to get out and play. But, they also are not not hyper like a lab or a golden might be. They are big couch potatoes. A fenced in yard for this kind of dog would be best but I you don't have one a good walk 3 times a day would be best. Most rescues have dogs 1 or older so you don't even have to worry about potty training either. if you would like more information or questions about greyhounds my e-mail is girlfriday1325@yahoo.com

Each dog has its minuses and pluses and each person will tell you different.Yorkie's are a more small petit animal so if you have young children this breed isn't suggested for children under 12 years old. If you child got off the couch and the dog was laying there and the child didn't realize that the dog was there and stepped on the dog they could very likely break the dogs leg. The dog would then relate children to pain and the broken leg. Pomeranian's are very good dogs but grooming is very tedious and taking the dog to a groomer is a must. They tend to bark a bit more than other breeds but are a sturdier breed and are very social dogs. Shih Tzu's (my personal favorite) are studiest of all these breeds and are very much a social breed, they are good with kids but their down fall is that they are a breed with little to no nose so eye problems and breathing problems do happen more than other breeds, grooming is tedious but their personality out weighs all the negatives. Maltese are sweet dogs but again are a very petit dog and not suggested with children under 12 years old. The best thing to do is talk with your vet or visit www.akc.org you can take a compatibility test on AKC's website. Also talking to breeders I have found are the best. Any reputable breeder will be more than happy to educate you on the breed and want their puppies to be best fit to their new homes. So also on AKC's website you can get a breeder referal. Do your research and you will have many years of happiness. Your headed in the right direction.

Yorki's are generally very nervous dogs and are better as an only dog with seniors.........Pomeranian are very fragile dogs and can get injured easily, Shih tzu and Maltese are HIGH maintenance dogs, and shed alot..... If your children are under the age of 12 I would recommend a low maintenance dog. which is sturdy enough to handle children.... You seem to like the hairier breeds so I would recommend a toy poodle, miniature schnauzer, or bishon Frise.
Other breeds would be a Pug, or small bulldog,
I have owned a Sheepdog, shih tzu, Lhasa apso (similar to Maltese) Neither small dog was good with kids one would run and hide the other would just walk around growling and grumping........... I Now own a Mini Schnauzer, Have 2 kids 3 and 8 and She is the BEST dog I have ever owned she is not just a pet she IS part of the family (she bugs the kids as much as they bug her) they are NON-shedding and do not have the same wet dog odour other breeds can get.....They are low maintenance and very loving and loyal......... Pick the dog that best suits your lifestyle........ hope this helps

I would get another Shih Tzu. I own and breed this type of dogs and they are great. I have four dogs, three cats, and 3 kids. The dogs get along well with everything! However, they are very friendly! They think everyone comes to the house comes to visit them!!!
With this breed, you have a lot of grooming! If you keep their hair long, you MUST brush it every day for at least an hour to keep the matts away! And, unlike that person above me said, they DO NOT SHED very much! They also have issues with their eyes. You must be very careful about keeping their eyes clear of hair so that they don't get scratched.
The plus to the breed is that they are very friendly. They require very little exercise, so they are good in small homes or apartments. I love them to death!
Good luck to you!

From personal experience I have found that maltese terriers, lhasa apso's and shitzus are not good around children. They tend to be a little precious and have low tolerance for being constantly bothered by kids.
I can't advise on yorkies or pomeranians as I've never had one.
We've had a silky terrier, a pug and a daschund and they were excellent with children of all ages. Very social happy little animals.

It really depends on where you live, unit or house, how much time you have, if you're an outdoors person etc. This is a great website that suggests the best dog for you, http://www.petnet.com.au/
Complete the questionnaire by selecting the appropriate button for each question and the computer will compare your needs and surroundings against those of 100 different breeds. The computer will select up to four breeds most likely to suit your needs. Enjoy

Well, Maltese are usually not good with children or for allergies. You should get a Shih tus or a Pomeranian. Yorkies and Pomeranians yap A LOT!
Try a Shih tzu! GOOD LUCK!

I would get either a yorkie or shih tzu cuz a pomerian is really active and barks a lot. But a both a beagle and a retriever gets along with kids, and is really obedient.

You did not mention the ages of your children but small dogs generally do not do well with small kids because small children handle them wrong and can hurt the dog which can lead to biting.
Maltese: These dogs can be snappish with inconsiderate children and may be difficult to housebreak.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/maltese.htm
Shih Tzu: This breed does well with polite, careful children.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/shihtzu.htm
Pomeranian: Not recommended for very young children. Too much attention from children can make these dogs nervous and they may become snappish. However, they can get along well with older, well behaved children.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/pomeranian.htm
Yorkies: They do best with older, considerate children.

You may want to reconsider getting a tiny dog and get one that is medium to large because larger dogs usually get along with children better. I know this is not exactly what you are looking for but I hope it helps. A good place to research is:
