Sgt Alvin York, who initially filed as a conscientious objector, but later (after a two day prayer vigil) decided to reverse his decision, and joined the Infantry. He was a marksman, and is noted for 32 kills in one engagement, and singlehandedly capturing 132 German soldiers. For that he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and later, a town in Northern Tennesee was given his name. It is believed to be very close to where he was born, near Pall Mall, Tn.

Whenever they would do inspection, they would ask 'ole stinky' where's his boots. He would reply, 'Them Thar jermens must of astole them in the night whiles I's was asleep! After a while, they stopped giving him boots to wear, thus the legend of the foot soldier was born! According to family records, he was surely a site, charging at those germans, and his fellow soldiers wearing masks over their face because 'ole stinky really had smelly feet!
