I would have to say NYPD Blue. One of the writers, executive producers and originators of the show, Bill Clark, is a former NYPD Detective.

I worked with one of his former partners for about 3 years, and most of the stories, from the first tfree seasons anyway, were based on actual case loads and calls. Of course there was a lot "sensationalism" in the productions to make for a better show.

But the interaction of the actors/detectives was on the money.

Currently, Reno 911 is the most realistic cop show on TV. Not because they're a bunch of screw ups but because that's how real life is, different types of people coming together to do a job. There's some really funny things happening out on the streets and this show captures the comedy involved in police work. I always said that I was in police work for the entertainment value.

Some of the oldies that were good were Barney Miller, best depiction of a NYPD detective squad room and Adam 12, a bit overly dramatic depiction of a street cops job but pretty true to life.

COPS, to me, shows what happens when you put a camera with a "gung ho" police officer and tell him to make some drama happen. Every arrest doesn't end with a flying take down.....and forget the CSI (Insert City Name Here) series. Phoney baloney from the word go, pure fantasy.

although i like watching the tv police dramas, and even though the show COPS in real events taking place as they happen none of them show you the real everyday life of a police officer. There are somedays that the only thing I get called out on is to help a little old lady back to her feet because she has fallen trying to get into bed, or some kids were playing and got their ball stuck in a tree. Dont get me wrong I have had to chase a perp for a short distance and battle many obstacle in the way. But in my 4 years of being an officer I have seen that twice, TV shows it as an everyday occurance..So dont believe what you seen on tv.

Police drama? None.

The only commercial television show that comes close would be Cops. However, there are several cable channels that have "behind the scenes" types of programming in police departments, prisons, animal control, etc. If you are wanting to see real life decisions made by the front lines, those are the shows to watch.

Not many, they never show the hours of paperwork a police officer must endure. They always show detectives showing up at a crimescene looking around a little, ordering uniformed officers around and then leaving the scene without even taking notes. No reality, because if they did, no one would watch.
