I have repetitive strain injuries, and I do take Ibuprofen quite regularly. Is it likely to cause serious harm in the long term?

Ibuprofen is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug). NSAIDs are notorious for causing all sorts of issues, especially GI problems. I was on a prescription NSAID and at a very high dose and ended up needing a colonoscopy and endoscopy because they thought I had ulcers and bleeding in my colon. Luckily it was nothing that bad but I still suffer over 18 months later from acid reflux, gastritis and a hiatal hernia, all related to this medication. So, are there serious side effects? Yes there certainly are and I strongly recommend NOT taking to much every day. If you are in that much pain you should really go to a pain management center where they can work out a treatment plan for yo that won't be so harmful. Best wishes.

I took an anatomy class about 4 years ago which was taught by one of the organ transplant procurement nurses at the Mayo clinic in jacksonville, FL. One day she came in tired after a long night tracking down a liver for a transplantee. Someone in the class joked "I bet all of them are drunks". she responded that while about 40% of their liver transplants were for alcoholics, another 40% were actually for chronic NSAID (ibuprofen) users. Apparently, used everyday, NSAIDs damage your liver slowly by slowly.

I say change your work habits to avoid repetitive strain injuries. If you can't because of the type of work, look for a new job. It's your liver.

Long term use can lead to stomach bleeding, ulcers and liver problems, if you are having repeated strains then i recommend seeing a doctor, they may be able to give you something that can help manage the pain better and also refer you to a physical therapist.

I was told recently that you can take it for a long period of time without any problems as long as you take the correct dose and take them with food as directed so im hoping there arent any side affects! Maybe it would be a good idea to ask your doctor if there is anything else they can do as it may do some damage if taken for a VERY long period of time. Hope you get better soon!

Ibuprofen can cause gastric irritation, ulcer and bleeding. This can occur with one tablet if you are unlucky. The effect can be minimised by taking it with food and if necessary with acid lowering drugs. There is evidence that most NSAIDs including ibuprofen have a heart attack risk, this mainly affects the more elderly and those with risk factors.

If you don't take more than the recommended dose then you will be fine. Don't get addicted to taking it because then you'll run into some serious trouble. I don't tthink it has long term effects.

Yes, it can do if taken in high quantities, or over a long period. Can cause stomach ulcers / bleeding, especially if you drink alcohol regularly.
