Now you are grasping the concept of Apostolic Authority!!! Baptists along with all the other "splinters" are false churches because they have no authority to do the things they do. The true christian church on this earth has received authority to act in the name of God from God himself! If they claim they got it through a prayer, they are kidding themselves! The authority can only be passed by the laying on of hands. That is how Jesus passed the authority to his apostles and that is how they passed this authority on. And you can take that to the bank.
**NOTE** Cynical's list should not only contain the founder, but whether or not the church claims apostolic authority. Some of those churches did not break off the Catholic church, but still claim this authority. If they make the claim, they are worth a look...if not...they are crap like the rest.

Yes, Baptists, like all other protestants, are a break off from the Catholic Church. This immediately shows that before the Reformation, there was only one Church to go to if someone was a Christian: the original church founded by Christ, the Catholic Church.
God bless.

Yes, all Protestants, including Baptists, broke off from the Catholic Church in the Reformation. As far as "authority", Protestants believe the authority to worship God comes from the Bible.

There was no authority for it to start other than their own desire to break away and start it. They've only been around some 400 years originating in Great Britian. The Catholic Church on the other hand traces back to Apostolic Authority of the original 12...2000 years ago.

Actually every Christian denomination is a break off from the Catholic Church, but if you want to get technical, they broke off from the Anabaptists,
which broke off from the Catholic Church in the 1500s because at that time the Church was corrupt.
Martin Luther (the guy who began the Protestant Reformation/Lutheranism) didn't actually intend to start his own religion, he just wanted to reform the Catholic Church. And he was right in doing so because the Church was doing a lot of horrible things at that time.
But he got excommunicated for heresy and had no other choice but to start his own church, if he wanted a place to worship with other people.
It all got started when he posted the 95 Thesis on the door of Wittenburg, whic were statements talking about what was wrong with the Church. From there, he began debating with people like Cardinal Cajetan.
People all around Europe were inspired by him and soon people like John Knox, Ulrich Zwingly, and John Calvin started splitting from the Catholic church.
The Baptists come from the Anabaptist group which began in Holland. The Anabaptists are actually very radical, which is why people started separating from them and formed the Baptist denomination.
But in my opinion, none of this really matters because we are all Christians and believe Jesus Chirst lived and died for us! : )
BTW BlondieBaptist, Catholics don't hate Baptists. At all. I am Catholic. I would know.

It may be of interest to you that the original reformers never intended to "break away" from the Catholic Church. They simply wished reform to take place within the church, and it did not. Therefore the church split, and each considered themselves to be the true church. The Reformed Church's original title was, "The Catholic Church, Reformed According to the Word of God". Baptist beliefs are another outcome of that split, and they disagree to a large extent with Catholic as well as Reformed/Presbyterian beliefs, taking on various points of Calvinism in their theology and believing in "credo", or believers' baptism.

ALL protestant religions are break offs from the Catholic church. That's why they are called Protestants - they protested against the church.
And no one needs any 'authority' to start a church. All they need is followers.

Yes... an where does ANYONE get authority to start a church? They simply assume it to be God's will.
