I have a fourteen yr old daughter who had what I thought was a virus two weeks ago.Glands up all over the place and general malaise. It didn't improve and she developed severe sore throat and a mouth full of ulcers. GP diagnosed tonsilitis but said it could well be glandular fever as it had been a long time and so many glands were still affected. She has been taking penicillin for 4 days now but has not really improved. I have heard that g.f. can sometimes be related to, or wrongly diagnosed as M.E. We are not a wimpy family. I don't go rushing to the doctor for the slightest little thing, so I am reluctant to suggest this rather controversial 'condition' to my GP. This was the first time we had consulted her since we registered two years ago. Anyone have any ideas or experiences?

I would ask for the Epstein Barr blood test to see if it glandular fever. However this didn`t show the virus for my daughter. Make sure she has good food and lots to drink. Allow her to rest as much as she needs.
My daughters school was great they allowed her to go to school and rest in the medical room if she needed to.
She had recurring bouts for a number of years +ME but this is the worst case scenario. Her friend was fine after a few weeks.

Your daughter could have a simple blood test for glandular fever and I am surprised the doctor didn't suggest it as this is a disturbing illness for mothers (as well as their children of course). Neither penicillin nor any other antibiotic will help glandular fever. It is a virus and must run its course. This can take from between a couple of weeks to a couple of months for residual fatigue to clear. I wouldn't worry about ME at this stage. Let her rest and feed her well if she has an appetite. But I still think you would feel better if you knew for sure, so try the blood test for confirmation. Good luck.

I used to get tonsitis alot when i was in my early teens, I found that penicillin didn't work and eventually found I was allergic to it (don't know if that helps). It did turn to glandular fever once and this can last months I think its too early to tell but if in any doubt and in the best interests of your daughter you should just go back to your GP as they are going to give you better advice than I can.
