I too prefer natural methods when I can. However, when it comes to fleas, orange peels and garlic tablets just don't work. Flea dips, powders and baths also have limited usefulness and are more toxic than the most effective solution, which is either Frontline or Advantage. These products have low toxicity and are highly effective in controlling fleas. Keep in mind that many dogs are allergic to flea bites, which results in the need for even more dangerous medical treatment - usually prednisone to control the allergy. Fleas also transmit disease. Even if you use natural methods on your dog, the fleas will proliferate in your house and yard and even with constant vacuuming and cleaning, you will not be able to rid your house of them without use of chemicals. Using Frontline or Advantage monthly is by far the best way to prevent fleas on your animal and spreading it other people's houses and animals.

I have been in the pest control industry for over 8 years now, and even own my own company. There really is no "completely" effective natural method for preventing fleas and ticks. It would be much cheaper in the long run to prevent a problem, then try to cure one.
If you are going to try some of the other methods that people are going to suggest here, be prepared for some potential health issues for both you and your dog. I have heard of people using garlic tablets. (Which I have used for years.) Some dogs have serious allergic reactions and require vet care afterward. I have heard of people recommending Sevan dust, which has the potential to kill your dog. The list goes on and on. Many people say the products you can get over the counter at Walmart work, but they are highly toxic to many pets and have been known to kill a few due to allergic reactions.
So, if you are planning to go the least expensive method, realize that there may be health risks involved that will end up costing you significantly more in the long run.
Good luck.

Ummm, I don't think that will work. For your sake and your dog's sake, just give the dog some Frontline. You get it in 6 packs and it keeps ticks and fleas away. Remember, fleas like people too.

you need to remove the fleas for the dog before you take her any where. you can do this by having her dip and then after two days use a flea preventive on the dog and also use a raid bomb for the house that kills fleas and ticks in your house and also you need to spray you yard.

Does your dog have fleas? Try using tea tree oil that's I use on my dogs. Just bath them with it treat your dog as though she has lice and fallow the directions on the bottle, this should work. Make sure to use a flea/lice comb to get the eggs out.

??? Orange peels?! Who are you?! Just treat your dog with a flea/tick shampoo and give it a flea collar-and keep the dog away from your friend's house until it's free of fleas.

I do not suggest orange peels; however, garlic tablets are relatively inexpensive and they will take care of your dog's flea problem. Give your dog one tablet a day.
