There are many many ways to reinforce concrete. The most common of these is to pour the concrete into an organized assemblage of rebar (steel rods). Depending on the strength desired, and the thickness of the slab, it is sometimes necessary to use thicker rebar or thinner rebar. For a sidewalk or something of that nature usually #3 rebar is used (3/8" in diameter) however in larger walls or slabs #5 may be used (5/8") I build a safe for a bank and they wanted a triple layer grid of #6 rebar (3/4" diameter) that's 3 layers of 3/4" thick steel placed a 8 inches apart inside a 3 foot thick wall of concrete.
there are other ways of strengthening concrete, they add fiberglass fibers to the mix to reinforce it, even metal shavings can be used in place of rebar (though this isn't popular because it is so difficult to finish) They can also introduce a hardening agent to the concrete such as calcium to make it harder faster.... also the amount of lime and aggregate (gravel or sand) can add to its reinforcement.
Hope this helps :)

reinforced concrete is concrete that has been strengthened by adding another material. Concrete is strong in compression (when you put a load on top of it) but is weaker in tension (when you pull it) and does not flex very well (it does not bend).
concrete itself is a mix of cement (the glue), sand and aggregate (small rocks)
so most typically metal rods (rebar) are added to give the concrete extra tensile strength. this allows it to bend, for example when it is used to build tall buildings or bridges. You can also add other materials such as glass fibers - for applications such as floors and roads where flexing is the property that is required.
