I love you as if you were my daughers real son. I love you as if you were my own." I was SHOCKED she said that to him hes only 15 years old. I couldnt believe she said that. I have both sides of this one to talk about- I am adopted myself and I adopted 2 children who are now teenager. I would never say it that way to my children- they are mine- the word REAL is what gets to me. Children who know they are adopted know that they have a birth mom- but let me tell you this, the adopted mom is the real mom and our children are our children. When we talk to our kids about their birth moms- they know that we are the real parents and they are the ones that gave them birth. I hope that the grandma did not mean it to upset her grandson. If it bothers you maybe you need to talk to her about it in a gentle way. take care- and remember to continue to treat your neice as your own.
one of the most beautiful statements about adoption is=
You did not grow in my tummy, but in my heart.

She's clearly from an older generation when adoption wasn't considered okay . . .people hid it. It still isn't accepted in many countries. So it's nice of her to accept him the way she is. In her day, he would not have been loved the same way.

But guess what? It isn't your business. You don't know anything about her grandson, his parents, or how they are raising him. Odds are he has been told that "That's how grandma talks" etc. and understands she's from a different generation.

It depends greatly on the environment in which the child was raised and how (s)he learned to show affection. There are some who would take that as a great compliment, although I definately see your point. It'd be hard to know without knowing the grandson's reaction.

I'm adopted, and I'm not offended by what she said. It may be that is her personality, and her grandson may already know that. I have had many very open conversations with my parents about being adopted, and at some of those times they have said "We love you as if you were our own".
No big deal....

I think that she didn't mean it in a bad way. I think that what she was trying to say just came out the wrong way. It may have hurt the child but I think he knew she didn't mean to say it like she was trying to be mean or anything. And It's not your business so just stay out of other people's conversations and leave them alone!!!!! Sorry but that's the truth!

I think that's insensitive because if her daughter adopted him and raised him he is her son and rubbing his face in that isn't very tactful but she probably didn't mean any harm and it really isn't your business.
