Of course they're not the same thing - birth takes place 9 months after conception.

Mary was a Virgin because young unmarried girls were called virgins. Conception and birth are two different things but I suppose you are also referring to the words Virgin and Immaculate rather than the conception and birth... But to the point of the question Mary got pregnant by a guy name Gabriel who, incidentally, got her cousin Elizabeth pregnant earlier and told Mary. When Gabriel heard that Joseph was going to put Mary away in shame Gabriel went to Joseph at night and convinced him that the pregnancy was not Mary's fault..that she was merely overcome by the passion of submission sometimes referred to as Love and also referred to as the Holy Spirit.
Gabriel was a dashing movie star before movies were invented and being a high commander in the King's Army was also called Gabriel the Arch Angel for he was a "good" person...and a handsome Elvis Presley that all the girls fell head over heels for. He was probably a good Karaoke singer in the King's Band too.
The Bible says that it was an angel that came to Joseph in a dream who delivered Jopseph the message that Mary was a good person, overcome by the spirit and that the child she would bear would be special.
Obviously Biblical language is soft on the promiscuity of Lady's man Gabriel but we can make the connections can't we.

I used to before I started looking at Yahoo! Answers. The Immaculate Conception is not something that my religion teaches, so when I heard it I initially thought it was related to the birth of Jesus, not the birth of Mary. It is obvious that many people still do not know the difference though.
I often think R&S needs a FAQ, but it is unlikely that many people would look at it.

Conception and birth are not the same thing. The virgin birth is proof that Mary was still a virgin when Jesus was born and the immaculate conception is proof that she was a virgin when Jesus was conceived within her womb.

No, one is dealing with how the baby was conceived, and the other is dealing with the birth itself.
