I've noticed my cat is infested with tapeworms (after spotting the segments) and I've grown really concerned for her and her 5 day old kittens. Could the kittens contract the worms (through her milk, etc. I know that is possible with roundworms and hookworms, but not sure about tapeworms). How serious is this issue to the kittens? And how effective will any treatments be (mainly concerning the kittens)?
Can the vet administer medications for kittens this young? Or will they be administered through the mother cat? I will be taking them to the vet, but it would be nice to know what to expect beforehand.
The cat has never been to the vet before as she is actually a stray, and this will only make her visit more stressful since she is not used to being handled by humans, and has only grown accustomed to me, any suggestions?

A cat gets tapeworm from ingesting fleas. So, the kittens will not get tapeworm eggs or larvae from their momma's milk - but thay can if their are fleas around. You may have to consult a vet wether it is OK to have your momma cat treated for worms while she is nursing. I do know that the kittens are still too young to be dewormed. I think they need to be a few weeks old - the vet can tell you better. Just call your vet and I am sure he'll be happy to advice you as to whether you can have your momma cat and her kittens treated for worms now or if you need to wait a few weeks.

my cat was infected with tapewoms after she got out and got a bout of fleas. the fleas were taken care of but after a few weeks i noticed the tapeworm segments too. i read online that the cats can live with tapeworms. just make sure that the kittens have thier own litter box. when they are old enough to be weaned then you could give medicine to treat the tapeworms. i got mine at petco for about $20 for 3 pills. you only need one. dont worry about the segments the only way the kittens can become infected is if they get fleas infected with tapeworms or if the eat the segments.not through the blood stream or milk. keep an eye that the infected cat's bedding is free of segments and the cat litter too. but if you are really concern maybe you should bottle feed the kittens as if they were orphans. and treat the cat.

Yes, kittens can be wormed from a few days old. In England your vet does not have to see the animal to hand over quality worming treatment - I assume that's the same in America. You also need veterinary flea treatment as fleas are hosts to worm species - Frontline spray can be used on kittens from a few days old.

She might have tape worms yet be confident to learn her decrease back end as you will possibly see them on her backside they appear like little grains of rice and he or she might desire to have around malicious application too, yet its no longer secure to handle her for worms whilst she remains feeding her kittens because of fact the drug may well be exceeded directly to the kittens interior the milk, yet she purely might desire to be skinny because of feeding the kittens a cat who remains nursing her youthful desires to consume extra as they % extra energy as she is ingesting for them as properly as herself, so as that they are in a position to get skinny so make confident she eats a properly balanced nutrition habitual to maintain her potential up, yet once you think worms do no longer manage her and not applying a vets suggestion as she might desire to nonetheless be letting the kittens suckle so does no longer be secure, plus all kittens are born with worms so take them alongside to the vet too to be dealt with,
