If you can't find a halal market, try a kosher one. Or you could go vegetarian and not worry about it.

It is important to know, that although it is "better" to look for Halal or Kosher meat from specialized supermarkets, when you are in the US, a hadeeth is being overlooked. It has to do with the fact that if you were invited to a Christian or Jewish home, it is Halal to eat their food. So if you live in the US, you can get your groceries or eat from any normal supermarket or restaurant if finding the specialized ones is too difficult. If you are buying food, however, you should make sure that you don't buy any food with pork or buy any groceries with gelatin in it. You can research this at the online Islamic books search engine http://www.muhaddith.org (although most of the books there are in Arabic, there might be some results in English as well)

From what I've seen, the difference between kosher and halal is pretty minor (I mean, like, the words are different for the prayers, but it's the same meaning.)

In some areas, halal meat is becoming more popular.

But barring that, get some kosher meat. It's about the same technique, and there's no pork, shellfish, fish without scales, birds of prey, carnivores, cropless birds, or mammals without cloven hooves (whew!)

And meat and dairy products are kept separate.

Ask your local mosque or Muslim org, if you still have questions. Check the Yellow Pages, web search, or local colleges/universities for groups.

usually they have halal symbol , halal meats are becoming more popular in the west, and they make more money for the vendor/slaughterhouse as they can be a little more expensive, which is great for the American farmer. eating halal meats in America helps the American farmer put more money in his/her pocket. some people if they can't find halal meats will eat kosher meats as a substitute, as Jews don't eat the pig either.
