Try ancestry.com.

Hey XoXoLove,

Family Search.com is the best first place to look. then GENFORUM, and if you are in the USA, Ellis Island. Depending on where you are, depends on the recommendation. If you plan to take subscriptions and have money for that, well, that is not what I specialize in.

Use GENFORUM for a specific SURNAME or country you are researching.

I like what I can get for FREE. Here are some of the best sites, and some that lead you to pay sites. Some pay sites give you cursory information on the screen, and if you want the records, you pay.

I am actually in the process of working on mine now. This is what I did and it seemed to work pretty well. First I spoke with as many of my relatives as possible and collected names and whatever random data I could. I bought FamilyTree Maker software and then entered some of the data that everyone agreed on. After I had a pretty good outline set up I signed up for ancestory.com and it connects with the software. It was quite easy to enter all the data I found online right into the software. Good luck and have fun!
