My labrador, Honey, was born with naturally dry skin and allergies. She bites and scratches herself everyday. Sometimes, she bites and scratches so hard, she starts to bleed and patches of fur fall out. What should I do to make her skin healthy so she won't have to scratch as much?

You should take Honey to the vet. He will probably give you some oatmeal and aloe shampoo to help soothe the skin and possibly a steroid. Sometimes when the dog is itchy for a while it becomes a habit to scratch and dig. The oatmeal and aloe shampoo will help the skin heal and the steroid will help prevent itching because healing skin itches. Also don't over bath Honey because bathing removes the skins natural oils.

Ah, yes, my bulldog Manny does the same thing. His vet says he has allergies, but we're not sure if they're food allergies or environmental allergies, like to plants and stuff. I came across a home remedy for this type of thing, and it said to spray the dog with some diluted apple cider vinegar regularly. However, I'm sort of afraid to try it because I don't know what will happen, and also I hate the smell of vinegar. My vet wants to start Manny on a diet consisting of venison and potatoes, rather than anything containing rice, just in case he is allergic to rice. In order to temporarily stop the scratching though, I seem to have had goodn luck with just wiping him down with some unscented baby wipes, and applying Vaseline to his dry little nose and paws when he gets to scratching and chewing.

It depends on what she's allergic too, and that can be tricky to find out. Some people would recommend castor oil for dry skin, but I'd ask the vet every time, because they can help you narrow down the ten thoussssssand causes. As a quicker solution, they can probably prescribe a medicated shampoo for dry skin - and check for flea allergic dermatitis, one of the most common causes of insane itching and baldness in dogs!

I'm guessing that you have already had her to the vet and it was his diagnosis that she has dry skin. In that case check with one of the better food stores, there are foods specifically formulated to provide additional oils that will relieve the dryness. There is also 'tripe' which you can add to her current food, just a couple of tablespoons a day should help. Remember though most treatments, whether additives to the diet or a complete change in food can take up to a month before you see any improvement.

the vet can give her a Cordisone injection. This is an anitbiotic that de-sensitizes the skin. By doing so it reduces the irritation to the skin in turn prevents her from wanting to scratch or itch herself. I have been doing this for years with my cats and dogs that are allergic to fleas....

Supplement with cod liver oil; it's great for the skin, and dogs love it. Fairly cheap, too.
I have heard great things about Avon's Skin-so-soft for dry skin and dandruff. It's made for people, but a lot of dog owners swear by it.

My cavalier had this problem, i started using a teaspoon of sunflower or olive oil mixed with her food every day, the oil is ingested and over a period of a month her coat was gleaming, her dry skin prob started to become less, and its great for their joints as they get older.

Take her to the vet to rule out dermatitis. Try switching her to a food without wheat, corn or soy. Add 1 capsule of fish oil to her food daily. Make sure she gets enough vits C&E.

CONTACT YOUR VET. That's the main thing. He/she will probably subscribe for you an oral or topical medication to stop the scratching and itching.
