The ceilings on the first floor of my house are about 7' 4". Is it possible to replace the wood joists that support the second floor with low-profile steel joists? I have seen some box-frame steel joists that are 100mm deep (4 inches). I think that this could increase the ceiling height by as much as 6". Am I crazy?

yes, you crazy! JK...
Well you could, but would it be cost effective? probably not... as you need to hire a structural engineer... rip out floors & ceilings... and replace them....

also, consider the fact that you will have less sound insulaton between floors, do you want that? probably not...
