The Cold War. Consider what was happening during the 1950's. HUAC was out of control under McCarthy, people were being censured or blacklisted if it was assumed that they were sympathetic to Communism. Since Communism under Lenin, Stalin and Khrushchev was at odds with the Western world, the statement was added to the pledge as a means to reinforce nationalism.

it was american propoganda against the soviets to add the word god, cause the russian and lithuanian people, etc. were deeply religious and we were saying "heh your government has sworn off god so dont kill us in a war cause we love god"
