I'm going to be a dog owner soon for the first time since I was a kid and as you all know, there's SO many dog food brands out there! I was walking around Petsmart the other day and was amazed at the variety. So here's my question to you....

What brand do you feel is the best? Whether it be Iams, Eukanuba, Purina, or something else, I'd love to hear your answer and why it's your favorite....

I used to feed my dogs Eagle Pack.

I think the recent recall should be an indicator that all that variety we see in the stores is pretty much the same stuff in different bags.

We feed our Yorkies, 'Royal Canin' because they make a food specific to the needs of that breed, (and other breeds as well). There is a brand out there called 'Wellness' that I would feed otherwise. It is the only brand that is FDA approved. Meaning, it is high enough quality that humans can eat it.

Look at the labels of dog foods, you don't want 'by-products' and 'corn-meal' to be your 1st ingredients. Look for meat as your primary ingredient.

Science Diet will likely be what your vet tells you to use, but beware, veterinarians get kick-backs from the company that makes SD if they promote it and sell it. SD is not bad necessarily, but there are better choices out there, just compare labels and you'll see the difference!

You want the main ingredients to be nutritional. Anything listed before that first source of fat, and including it, are the main ingredients of the food.

Dogs have a short and simple digestive tract for ease of digesting animal protein and fat. Dogs can live without any vegetation (carbohydrates) but can also do fine with eating *small* amounts. Dogs do not have the ability to break down cellulose so plant materials are not digested well, if at all. Many grocery store dog foods have corn as a 2nd ingredient!!!! So why such large amounts of grain in grocery store foods...it's more profitable not nutritional!

Find out what's really in pet food, rate your dog's food, compare brands side by side and find out how to pick a good dog food.

When you think about it, what does your dog need from its food in order to be healthy?

Today our pets have a wide variety to meet their tastes and needs and we have our choice of what kind of food we can choose to feed them. Despite the variety, pet foods usually fall into three major categories. These categories are: Grocery store foods, these types of dog and pet foods are usually found in grocery stores and mass marketed retailers and can contain lower quality, less expensive ingredients. The second category is "premium dog foods," which can also be found in grocery's stores but are also found in pet stores and through your local veterinarian's office. These types of foods are usually made from some higher quality ingredients and are usually made evident by the expense of the food. Some of these pet foods though can contain lower quality ingredients that you aren't aware of. The third and final category is homemade dog food.More and more people are beginning to make their dog's food at home rather than buying commercial formulas. Homemade dog food doesn't contain any substances that could possibly be harmful to your dog's health such as artificial coloring and artificial flavors.

Another reason to make homemade dog food is the preservatives added to the commercial dog food. Homemade dog food has the benefit of optimum freshness without preservatives.

There are dogs that would greatly benefit from a homemade diet. Some dogs who suffer from allergies that cause severe itching may find relief once switched from commercial dog food to a homemade diet.

Processed dog food is a relatively new product and scientists don't fully understand the differences between commercial food and a diet of fresh food. There may be problems occurring in a dog's health because he is being given food that has had the nutrients cooked out of it and then sprayed back on.

Would you like to prolong the quality and length of your dog's life by 135%?You should keep your dog healthy by homemade dog food.

I prefer to feed raw but there are times I get lazy and then I supplement my dogs feedings with Canidae (you will not find it at petsmart) I prefer it because it is a holistic food with human grade ingredients, it has four protein sources and my dogs do really well on it. It is not ther most expensive but it is very good quality and one of the best dog foods.

The best thing you can do is research the many different brands. Meat should be the first ingredient and the foods should NOT contain corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp, beef or by-products, it should also be made from human grade ingredients and it should be naturally preserved.

I feed my five chihuahuas, "Royal Canin Dry", sold at Petsmart. My veterinarian recommended it, and my dogs love it. It's also a very good quality food.

I feed Blue Buffalo, available at PetsMart, as kibble and Pedigree (without wheat / wheat gluten) canned. I am considering switching to their dry food http://www.azmira.com/
it is expensive ($42ish for a 35 pound bag) but my dogs are worth it.

Eukanuba is my favorite. Protein in it helps puppies brains develop and keep grown dogs smart and alert. Iams is another favorite, it's the basic stuff that most breeders use. I've been trying Beneful lately, and it seems to be working very well with my lab puppies and miniature dachshund. Good luck!
