I have heard that tanning beds really aren't that bad for your health, but then I've also heard that they are awful. Which is right??

On a scale of 1-10, they are about a 9 or 10. They have been known to promote MANY types of skin cancer and possibly even death from certain types of skin cancer. My advice, don't use them. I know it's nice to be dark in the winter when no one else is but what it does to your body isn't worth it.

Tanning beds are a double edge sword. It helped me because i live in the arctic and only used small doses to help with SAD(seasonal affective disorder). I only used it for 10 to 20 minutes. It should not used to burn your skin to a brown color because skin cancer is not fun. You can die from it and it is hard to tell the diffirence between a simple mole and a cancerous spot. If you are experienced tanner please see a dermatologist and you also don't mention your skin ,color, texture and race. All play a factor. I can get away with the 15 minutes 1 to 2 times a week because i have hispanic skin (medium skin). We are all vulnerable to skin cancer and please be careful with the tan booths. I used to abuse them when i was younger and the sun too. I am formerly from California and a transplant to the Arctic

tanning beds do about twice the damage of the same time spent outside on a sunny day. It is concentrated UV radiation. In my profession we call them cancer coffins.
