Others have given this answer, but just to reinforce...
Eat more calories than you burn in a day. FitDay.com is a good place to track your calorie intake. Go with high protein, high carb, high fat diets. When I say "high fat" I mean avacadoes, peanut butter and olive oil NOT ice cream, potato chips and butter.
I am currently on a gain program. I am eating 3000-3500 calories every day, lifting heavy weights for low reps, and getting plenty of sleep. I've gained 3lbs of muscle in the last 6 weeks.
Notes:
-flax oil is a great way to get calories and "good" fat without much effort, just mix it into a shake
-whey protein powder is pretty much a MUST on this diet
-if you're not hungry, mix up some Carnation instant breakfast in milk, you get a lot of good nutrition and calories without having to choke down food you don't want

Weight training helps a person build muscles and increase body weight. Proteins are required for building muscles, so having high protein foods like eggs, milk, peanut butter, protein shakes will help you in gaining weight. You can find a lot of information at http://www.toloseweight.org/gainweight.html
