Do you work for a big company? I can get $60/day from Hertz through my company.

It may be a little inconvenient, but just go out to one of the airports, Newark is probably the closest for west side Manhattan or La Guardia, and the rentals are way cheaper, including one week specials. So take an airport bus from Manhattan and go out to the airport and rent there. check car rentals on Orbitz or Expedia.

A car is more of a burden than a help in NYC. If public transporatation doesn't work for you then cabs will still probably be cheaper than a rental car in the end.

If you're staying in the city the whole time, you don't need a car rental, just public transport.
