website and it doesn't look free anymore. Please don't just google up some web sites to tell me about. I can do that, I
want to hear from people who have a good anti-virus they
got for free and they like it.

Also I had an antivirus program before and it expired
(either McAfee or Norton) Do I need to do anything to
get rid of the old program or since it's expired, it's not
on my computer anymore? So can I then just begin the
install with the new program? Also I have a Mozilla Firefox browser, if that matters.
Thanks in advance, Tawnya :-)

Has anyone heard of Nod32 or Sophos?

To get rid of Norton or Mcafee, go to their website and use the removel tool. This will get rid of everything.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free. After you install any of them, make sure you update them to get the full affect.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

try avg free edition in download.com. it is a great software and protects the computer pretty nicely. also an antivirus which is not much popular is antivir which is free and even better than mcafee, trust me cuz i've used both and it detects and deletes an infection much faster than mcafee or avg.

also download spybot search and destroy, or hijack this. they are both free and can be found at download.com

also consider changing your browser, opera is the fastest and the most secure browser and i'm saying this on behalf of experience and research.
good luck:)

Ive worked on computers, built them, troubleshooted them, ect. since 2001, and my anti-virus of choice for EVERY computer I have worked on all these years, has been Avast! Anti-virus Home Edition, and Avast! Anto-virus Professional Edition, they are very stable, they run in the background, use MAYBE 2-3mb of RAM, so it isn't resource hungry as McAfee and Norton are, and they are easy to remove if you have to. Not to mention Avast! is a program I like to call, "Install and Let Go." You install it, it updates automatically, scans, everything, and NEVER nags you unless their is a problem and under default, it fixes the program itself. Very good program. 10 out of 10 stars. I highly recommend it.

Tawnya ... Perhaps you went to the wrong web page or didn't look carefully enough? Since Grisoft does sell security products, naturally, they display these first. See my link below for the free version of AVG Anti-Virus and their free AVG Anti-Spyware.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/219333/an/0/page/0#219333

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent.

If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.

If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.

Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.
