ten commandments excludes the commandment:
You shall not make yourself any graven image [to worship it] or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
You shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God...

and making ten by ripping apart the ninth commandment:
You shall not covet your neighbor's house, your neighbor's wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.

The deleted commandments leaves it open for people to outwardly worship and pray to said statues. You should believe all things with your heart. Clearly, the bible says "we should walk by faith and not by sight." Pictures count only if they are worshipped.

You cannot compare praying for your alive sick mother to a dead saint. the only person that can hear your prayers to God thru Jesus Christ.
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Praying to saint is a waste of time and energy!!

Your part about graven images is PART of the 1st Commandment- Thou shall no other Gods before me. It is exactly the same thing.

First- did you know the Cahtolic Church ASSEMBLED the Bible???

Second- you have no idea at all what you are talking about. Yes, the Commandment forbids idolatry- but Catholics don't worship freakin' statues. They are images to REMIND us of holy men and women who have set great examples for all Christians. This is no different than keeping a picture of Great Grandma on the mantel.
WE DO NOT WORSHIP STATUES OR SAINTS. We worship GOD ALONE.

When we 'pray' to saints, we are asking THEIR prayers for OUR intentions. This is no different than me asking you to pray for my sick mom. Don't you dare call it communicaiton with the dead, either- 'cause if you are a Christian, and not just a Catholic basher, you would know that those in Heaven are more alive than we are.

I think you need to have better source for your information on Catholicism. Try the Catechism of teh catholic Church. It is online at http://www.scborromeo.org/ccc/ccc_toc2.htm

Here is what is written as the first commandment:

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.

Have you ever bothered to check and see that there are many versions of the Ten Commandments and that they vary from translation to translation? There is no one correct version because the original manuscripts don't have them in one specific order.

And if you're referring to the pictures and statues we have of Mary and the saints, then I sincerely hope that you have no angel figurines, no pictures of loved ones, and no landscape paintings or posters on your walls. That would mean -- le GASP -- that you have graven images of real life things in your house!! Oh, the horror of it all!

Surely you don't believe that we Catholics worship statues or pictures, do you? If you *do* think that, then you need to do some serious studying with those of us who know what we believe and why we believe it.

That's in there ... and also covered more in depth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Catholics do follow this.

We abstain from creating art of "HEAVEN" and "HELL". Sure we have pictures & statues of Jesus & Mary but they dwelled here on Earth, and our art work is of that. In fact, art is a form of prayer, like song, or the strokes of a pen to create words. Catholics don't bow to the art or serve the art work.

I always find this mind blowing. Here we are six thousand years later debating the exact wording, in English, of a six-thousand-year-old oral tradition which began in Hebrew.
