Does it make believers into worse, less fully human people?

Yes, and yes.

Religion makes people waste too much time on superstition and less time on reality. It spoon-feeds them their morality and discourages them from listening to other people's worldviews. This makes them morally lazy.

We are made in the image of the invisible God, who is a spirit. It makes human beings less fully human to believe that this world is all there is, that there is nothing after death but endlessly being reincarnated here on this earth. Or any other planet, as members of a decaying, ever dying cosmos. God lives forever and so will we. It is appointed unto man but once to die and after that the judgment. When the judgment comes, when Christ returns, then as it says in Revelation 22:11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
