Hi people, I've broken my little finger on my left hand (which I've done many many times before) but this time I can't straighten it out at all, I've got it strapped to the ring finger but it's bend, is there any other way I can splint it so it's straight or doesn't it matter that it's bent??

Thanks in advance!

It sounds as though you have DISLOCATED the finger. This happened to me some time ago and the medics explained that the tendon in the little finger is so strong that the force of the injury causes the bone to split where the tendon joins it. FIRST get the dislocated joint reset at the A&E dept, then get the finger strapped to the next finger. Be prepared for a few weeks of odd nerve tingles. Good luck and hope you get better soon.

Please dont try to straighten the finger as you may displace the fracture even more.Just put a piece off gause in between the little finger and the ring finger so the fingers dont rub then just tape underneath the knuckles and above the knuckles but not to tight. And try and keep the arm elevated as much as possible. Why havent you been to your local A/E Dept to get advice ? They will more then likely do the same what you have done anyway, but you should off got this x-rayed.

Normal first aid temporary splint would be to use two Popsicle sticks as a splint on the bottom and top of your finger. Then, using tape to secure them into place and to tighten their clamp down on your finger forcing it to straighten between them.

However, this is a temporary splint until you are able to get into an orthopedic surgeon to assess the break. If the break is bad enough, or mal-positioned, then he will need to re-set the break to allow it to mend properly.

The possibility of nerve-damage mentioned above is correct as well. However, something as simple as the loss of some mobility is an undesired side-affect for an improperly set break...

if you don't want to go to your doctors then you should try putting a Popsicle stick on the top and the bottom or go to your local drug store and see if they have any finger splints there. As for the straightening of them you should probably really go to the docs because if it really is broken then it may grow or fuss like that and you will never have full function of your finger again.

It sounds like it might be dislocated if that is the case you will need it relocated before any strapping is applied as it will stay deformed. Have you had it x-rayed to confirm a fracture?
It depends on that and as to where the finger is broke as to which splint is suitable. Best option is go to A & E at some point get it x-rayed and they will be able to splint it for you!

Good pharmacies have aluminum/foam combination finger splints for about 3 dollars. I think I may have purchased a pair at the Wal-Mart. If you can't find finger splints, icicle sticks, craft sticks, small pieces of wood will work... see a first aid book or web site. If you leave it bent too long, no one will be able to straighten it without re-breaking it.

You probably want to see if a doctor or someone can set the finger, then he will give you a little metal splint.

Go to your local drug store and look for a finger splint. They are are where the knee braces are. Then when you find it get some surgical tape and tape it into place . Ask the pharmacist for further information.

I don't know why you have broken your little finger many times, but it is likely permanently bent due to poor mending of the bone matireal in the past, that is what happens when you do not seek professional help in such instances.
