i'm not very happy about the fact that almost all of you are giving bad commets apart from the few good ones that i've seen have given good answers. let me point this out to you. i did not drive well unfit though drink i was just getting my mobile from my mates car but as i had the keys and was in the drivers set i got nicked and done. just because you've been banned for drink driving does not mean the person had to be driving so why dont all you ppl who jump in with your big mouths and self centerd views think about things before you say anything?

Take the bus for a while. You have shown the world you are a high-risk driver, and that is why you are getting quotes for big bucks. You now have to prove to the world, over time, that you can be trusted. There is no cheap insurance for people convicted of serious offences like that, and there shouldn't be.

Insurance premiums are based upon age, length of time driving, driving record, and location. You will not find cheap insurance, sorry.

My daughter has been going through this same thing, and she's 24. She has a clean driving record, but has been driving less than 5 years, and lives in a large city. Her premium is almost $1,000 for 6 months! She shopped around, and got the best premium she could find.

Perhaps you could check with an independent insurance agent. Independent agents work with many different insurance companies, and they will do the shopping around for you, and try to get the lowest possible rate.

It would be really stupid for any insurance company to insure a 22yr old with a DUI for cheap. Just think about it.

Get a 49cc moped - driving is a privelige, not a right.

I genuinely laughed loud at cheap insurance, the insurance companies are going to rob you.

Sorry about the harsh statement, but its kinda obvious. Try getting a motorbike to reduce insurance costs.

Good luck

PS don't take the first paragraph as an insult, think of it as a lesson not to drink drive again.

Sounds like you've done your time but the bonus package with the drink drive ban is the expensive insurance I'm afraid.
It will be difficult but someone might cover you.
Try asking them if the fee goes down if you stay with one company.
They might have schemes like most have for no claims credit build ups.

You were obviously done on a technicality. Most people don't realise you can be arrested for being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle even if you are asleep on the back seat, if you are in possession of the keys.
Unfortunately whatever you do will be expensive. Even if you try insurance through a relative as a named driver, all convictions, etc still have to be declared.

You were banned! Of course your insurance is going to be sky high! Why should you have cheap insurance when you have BEEN BANNED? and for DRUNK driving!!!???!! This is the penalty you are having to pay for your previous recklessness. You say you have now passed your test. Does this mean you were banned for drink driving whilst NOT even having a valid drivers licence? So you could have been done for driving without a licence...if you did not have a licence you would NOT have been covered by insurance, so you could have been done for not driving with insurance too! You don't make these last 2 points clear, but can you see you have a record that does NOT appeal to insurance companies? How would you have felt if you had hit someone whilst driving under the influence and badly injured them or worse? You have not proved to be a good risk, so they will ask for an enormous premium. I'm afraid you will just have to demonstrate to insurance companies that you can be trusted behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. You can only do that by building up a no claims bonus like the rest of us and stump up the large insurance premiums you will have to pay until you have shown you can be responsible to drive with care. No one to blame but yourself I am afraid.

OK after reading your 'additional information' you would seem to have been rather unlucky, but you can hardly be too upset by folk who, like my comments I suppose, have been rather judgemental. You could have supplied more info at the beginning so people could make informed comment. Sadly the truth still is that you will find it hard to get cheap insurance with this on your record, regardless of how unfortunate the situation was when you got banned. Hope you manage to find something.

Come on people, he is asking for advice not abuse. How many of you have got absolutely hammered and then driven to work the next morning?

For all of you who answered yes.... NEWSFLASH you were all drink driving, and anyone who has a car and drinks has done it at sometime in their lives for the plain and simple fact that alcohol stays in your system for HOURS, so lets cut the hypocracy.

And after all is said and done, this is YAHOO ANSWERS not YAHOO JUDGE ME.

Anyhow, back to the question.

You will not get cheap insurance for years to come and I'm afraid it is another pennance for your brush with the law combined with the fact that you are under 25 and you have just passed your test.

Take a look at the rearmost pages of the MAX POWER magazine. They have a number of different insurance companies for insuring different risks of driver.

I hope you have learned your lesson, kid. The young and stupid phase is now in the past, time to move on and grow up.

Best of luck

Geordie

Most insurance will be high, at least when you start looking. After a while, it will go down, but the best advice to you is probably get a quote from vern fonk. Though their commercials definately are annoying, that's probably your best shot as to the cheapest car insurance. Good luck!

All your Friend had to do was say he was the one driving and you would have been cleared??? I am sorry this happened to you but unfortunately once you have a DUI, it will take years to get it cleared and you may have to get a Lawyer to get this taken care of. Unfortunately unless you get your Mom or someone else to purchase the Insurance, you are gonna have Sky Rocket rates until this Charge is cleared.
