Please don't lecture me about eating right, exercising regularly and developing a healthy lifestyle, I've tried that before. I've also tried the South Beach diet, Atkins diet, Calorie diets, Lowfat diets, purging (not proud of it). I even spent thousands with the Jenny Craig program Its all failed. I have a chronic sweet tooth that I can't repress. In less than 3 months I've gained 30 pounds and I'm suffering from depression.
I really don't know what to do anymore. I'm 5'4" 176.5 pounds. I'd lose weight but then I'd sabotage myself and start eating sickeningly. I've been trying to fix my life and its a struggle. I've made the step to see a psychologist and psychiatrist. I'm getting treatment for my depression
But what really gets me down is my weight. I've made an appointment with a doctor to discuss my options. I'm thinking of trying Adipex or Xenical. Any advice please?

I live with my family so I can't really clean out the kitchen to avoid temptation. I can't ask them to change their lifestyle to fit mine. I've tried portioning food but it just doesn't work.

Have you tried to test to see if you have a thyroid disorder? I believe it is a simple blood test.
Other than that - I know it's a serious bummer and you are definately gaining weight very fast, and it is a vicious cycle of depression/eating/depreassion/eating.
The only thing that helped me is to keep track of what you eat, and allow yourself to cheat every so often. Otherwise, you are right, you will sabotage your efforts and start into bad habits again.
What helped me lose 25 lbs is a daily visit to www.healthyweightforum.org, because people there will give you serious encouragement and always be there for you when you need support.
Also, I signed up for a free website called fitday.com, and logged in everything I ate and all activities I have done during the day.
You are on the right track. Trick diets don't work, you just have to know your limits.
The sweet tooth - well, what I did was I chose the least-fattening least-damaging sweet thing I could find, and made that into my sweet vice. Chocolate necco wafers and tootsie rolls were my thing - they were significantly less damaging then things like reeces pieces and hershey bars.
Also, always pack little mini baggies of things like fruits and veggies, dried berries and nuts with you wherever you go so that if you feel hungry, you just snack on those instead of head for a deli or vending machine.
It sounds like you are serious, so all you really need now is dedication. You don't need to waste money on diets, just find out for yourself what your own personal favorite low-cal snacks are, and dig right in.
Plus, water is your friend. Sodas are the enemy. There are certain things that you can do that are so easy yet so effective, like cutting down portion sizes and those things that have calories with no nutritional value.
Good luck! you can do it!!!!!

wow... I can relate to some of that. When I was depressed I lost 60 lbs on Prozac. I did gain it back about 2 yrs after getting off the medication. Any way...I am now wiriting down everything I eat and go to a gym 3 time a week. Try having a goal of just 10 lbs to lose...when you reach this goal, treat yourself to something other than food. Go shopping or something. Then set a new goal for another 10 lbs. good luck!

Talking to your psychologist is the best thing you can do. I truly believe that over eating and eating the wrong things for your body can be a psychological thing. Figuring that out seems like it would be your best bet. Also, talk to your family about it. Even if you live with them, they should still support you and your desire to loose weight by not keeping junk food around the house. Just because they may not be struggling with their weight, does not give them an excuse to keep things around the house that make your struggle harder. Best of luck.

Don't try and give up the foods that you love, because then it is harder and you probably will fail. The key is portion control. You still get a treat but you don't have to eat a ton of it. You can try going on a diet, maybe even one that you have tried before, and in addition set aside for yourself a little treat like a couple bites of cake or one small cookie for you to look forward to. This should satisfy your craving. Set aside your treat in advance and know that that is all you can have that day. It might help if you save it for the evening so that you can look forward to it. Good Luck!

Ask yourself what you want more. That Twinkie or a thin figure? I finally resorted to Bulimia. It worked at least. I lost 40 lbs. in about a year and a half. I know people are going to give me thumbs down, but I am just telling you what worked for me. And by the way, I easily stopped throwing up last year.
