I'm looking for suggestions for the first song after the bride/groom, father/daughter, etc. dance. Something that will appeal to all ages and will make them want to dance? What song makes you want to get up and dance? Your suggestions are appreciated! Thanks! :) *We're not having a DJ we're going with music from a laptop.

After the first song, the bride and groom will be the ones left on the dance floor. Play something that's fun or kooky--something you and your husband, and everyone else can dance freestyle, like the song danced to by John Travolta and Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. A quarter of the way through the song, grab someone else and encourage everyone to dance. Play one more freestyle-dancing song to encourage more people to dance.

Now that you've got people on the dance floor. You can follow up with a slow-to-medium paced (pace depends on the age of your guests) merengues or cha-chas. Two or three of these will suffice. The trick is to play the same songs from the same genre together. Both older and younger generation can dance to this type of music. Probably after one or two songs, the older guys would like to go back to their seats and take a break. The guests who are younger or ones that have more stamina might want to stay on the dance floor.

You can then play East Coast style swing dance music. (i.e. Zoot Suit Riot, Elvis' Hound Dog, etc.).

By this time, all your dancing guests might be a little tired and would need a slow paced song. Try playing an easy line dance (and I know this is kind of cheesy) that everyone knows, like YMCA, or Macarena, or maybe the electric slide. The ones who took a break earlier might come back to the floor.

These are just suggestions. What you play depends on the age and tastes of your guests.

It really depends on the age of those attending but something old and classic would be a good choice. Somthing like Celebration by Kool and the gang, YMCA is a good one as well, Thunderstruck by AC/DC, the twist, greta balls of fire,
shake, rattle and roll, all arond the clock, alltime rock and roll I think the one by Bob Segar, Madonna's Holiday, bizarre love tringle or blue monday by New Order, Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones, if you are more into country try Garth Brooks,
Lionel Richies all night long, Something upbeat like a good Techno song like Sandstrom by Darude.
I would also recommend this slow song since many people coming may be married all ready John Michael Montgomerys
I Love The Way You Love Me. I hope this gives you a few tips and Congratulations. Sometimes you just have to see what everyone likes you can play a song and everyone will be like thats okay but then the next song they will all be on the floor. Remember this is the couples day so do not be against playing stuff they like. Mix in a little Eminem the not so raunchy stuff, maybe some Michael Buble, New INXS, Creed, Barenaked Ladies, and then mix in some dance music. Some of the old 80's and 90's stuff is still enjoyed to day like the classic I Like To Move It, Saturday Night, check out the movie soundtrack from night at the roxbury you may find some very likable tunes from the list.

God Bless and may the party be a rockin!

I guess it depends on what kind of crowd you have at the wedding... my sister owns a wedding and event coordination business in Austin, TX. I work with her and we've heard everything from 'Tricky' to 'Roxanne' to 'My Girl'. The Police seemed to do the trick, surprisingly. You could also take into consideration the 'theme' of the reception. Are you on the water? You can play something like the Beach Boys. (I know that sounds cheesy, but be open minded and you might find a song that goes well with your surroundings.) People will feel more apt to get up and dance when the music fits the surroundings and it just feels right. It has to be something, like you said, that appeals to all ages. Timeless. Good luck! Hope its your fairytale wedding.

there are a lot of web sites that have song lists on them from companys who provide djs. You should print one out...it might help you find some good songs without having to scramble to think of enough songs to fill the time.
