How do I get cheap surface freight to South America from Britain?

I need to send some personal possessions - books, clothes, that sort of thing - to a friend's address in South America. But they will weigh a fair bit, and I don't want to spend a fortune.
Speed isn't the main issue - but I would like them to arrive in one piece!
Does anyone have any bright ideas?

Try to find freight forwarders. They can help tremendously.

Depending on:

VOLUME (volumetric size) WxLxD and/or
WEIGHT

check freight forwarders both via ocean freight and airlines. And compare.
