They're both. Poor people food means that it's cheap, which doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It's not filet mignon, but it'll get you full. Spiral mac & cheese is a godsend. Cheesasaurus Rex won't do you wrong.

Mac and Cheese, especially "seasoned" with catsup was an Irish/American "staple" in the '50's. School lunch usual, even if you went home for lunch to that or Campbells Chicken Noodle....real blue collar America here in a time when only one parent had to work to make the rent.
Ramen is a far more recent import from our Japanese friends whom probably use it like we do; a quickie lunch for the busy working stiff. Seems everything cheap is labeled "ghetto" food and comes with embarrasment or shame attached because to be poor is to be filled cheaply. How about grits? Still love my grits 'n' gravy despite the fact I am above the poverty line and they go great with sausage and eggs.
As for Ramen, love the instant noodles to which I add cheese, meat and veggie to enhance, or fish and fowl. The Yuppies "shop Asian" because they think it's "hip" and quite soon the noodle price will rise and we are back to rice and beans.

Ramen is big on college campuses you can make it on a hot plate, Mac and cheese is more what I'd call a kid food, that grows into a comfort food, its also prevalent at southern picnics. While both are reasonably priced I wouldn't consider them to be purely poor people food.

It could also be called COLLEGE FOOD, so does that make it ghetto?! I won't even start on what the word 'ghetto' actually means... I think the Jewish families in concentration camps would have loved to get their hands on some mac'n cheese, or tap ramen. ANYWAY...ghetto it's not. CHEAP it is!

"ghetto food"????....Honey it's what you like, not ghetto food!! I'm sure the richest people like mac & cheese and ramen noodles. My family makes a 6 figure income and we like and eat mac & cheese and ramen noodles....and yes, I have always come from a well-to-do family. Mac & cheese is not only for the poor, sweetie...it's all about taste. Another thing, before criticizing poor people or "ghetto" food, try learning to spell ramen correctly....don't you have spell check? Try using it.....lol!

I have never lived in a ghetto or for that matter driven though one. I have never heard mac n cheese or roman was ghetto food. I come from a well off family and married a very successful business man and here's a shocker we have roman in our house as well as mac and cheese. If you have kids odds are you have it around the house they love the stuff

who cares if they're ghetto foods or not? they're taste good and they're cheap. If you think about it, lots of college kids survive on ramen noodles. if they eat a lot of that, then are they all ghetto?
