I sold someone a puppy and she said he was doing really good with housebreaking but then he started going to the bathroom in the house a lot.
she has had him for about a month.
she said he is being taken outside every 30 minutes and he will go outside and then come in and crap on the floor. he is being rewarded for going outside but still goes inside.
I don't want to have to take this dog back, please help with some suggestions!!!!! Thank you!!!!

Did you produce this dog yourself, or did you previously buy it and then sell it to someone else?

IF you are the ' Breeder ' you should have the answer to this so you can be prepared when people come to you for help. If you don't know and you are the breeder, then you should rethink breeding any future litters til you learn a whole lot more about dogs in general, besides everything that goes along with breeding, producing a litter, and making sure that you are qualified to be helping people with their problems.

Take the dog back, it's your responsibility!
Did you recommend that they crate train the dog?
Or teach them to hang a bell on the door so that the dog has some sort of communication to be able to tell them that he has to go out??

The answer is way too easy... He goes outside til he pees and poops, THEN he gets a treat, and not before. He doesn't come back in, til he pees / poops. You know what he has to do and when he has to do it, don't come in, til he has finished!

It's apparent that if he is peeing after being out, then he hasn't been outside long enough. How hard is that? If he isn't pooping outside, DUH, he is going to come in and poop. If they aren't going out with the dog, then get their lazy butts outside with the dog so that they can see what he is or isn't doing and then they are there to reward and praise him.

Why is she taking him out every 30 mins..... it almost sounds like the pup doesn't know when or where to go if you ask me. the pup should be taken out after it wakes up and after a meal. Do not leave food and water down in unlimited amounts while training..... some dogs don't know when to quit. and it makes training more difficult.....She also needs to clean and deodorize the area that the puppy has gone to the bathroom in, really well, if he smells anything he will be a repeat offender. Are there any other pets in the home, some male dogs will "Mark their territory as well", A firm NO and time out for for bad behaviour and GOOD DOG and treats for good behaviour. Training a puppy is not always easy and one month is not enough time for a proper evaluation.... A new puppy should not be given run of the house at the beginning confine it to one area usually kitchen is best as it does the least amount of damage, then once the pup is more confident on the training you can start introducing him to one room at a time..... Hope this helps.....

The change of dogfood mentioned above may also be the problem it is that frequent.....food change should be gradual.

Buy housebreaking pads which are available at any PetCo, Petsmart, etc. I believe they have a special scent that tells a dog to use the bathroom on it (dogs tend to use their sense of smell when trying to find a place to do their business).

Use the pads inside for several days until the puppy is consistenly using the pad instead of the carpet. After a few days, take the puppy outside to go potty, but also take a pad and place it in a portion of the yard where you'd like him to go. After several days of getting used to using the restroom on the pads outside, try not taking a pad when you take him out - the puppy should be used to going potty outside. This is the method I used when we got our puppy and she was not only housebroken easily, but she also STILL goes in the same area of the yard where I trained her to several years ago.

Right now, the puppy is smelling his scent inside the house from where he's gone potty inside - that's why he continues to go there to do his business. You have top start breaking this as soon as possible - use any specialty shampoos, etc to clean the carpets and remove the scent. At the same time, you replace "his"scent with the scent on the pads so he has another place to go.

I never heard so much garbage. Of course you don't have to take back a puppy because it's not housetrained, that is the owner's job. Imagine taking a toddler back to the hospital because it wets its bed once or twice!!! What does the woman expect, a ready housetrained puppy? Ridiculous. I cannot believe a puppy craps every 30 minutes anyway, this means there is something seriously wrong with the puppy. She is leading you up the garden path (so to speak).

Tell her to take the puppy to training classes (ask her vet), or she can just do the job herself (so to speak) if she cares to get out of her easy chair and take a little trouble. Give her the link below. I recommend crate training but there are several methods that work.

Rewarding him when he goes outside is great! But she also has to make sure she doesn't react when he goes inside. If she does, it is just negative reinforcement. Also, if this has just come up, something else may be to blame. Has she just changed his food? This can cause his tummy to get upset, and problems may follow.

If she hasn't been using a crate to train him, she might want to try. This has worked well for me for many puppies!

I hate to say just go to this web site www.so-easy-dog-training for questions like these but, there really is some great advice there, especially tips for trouble shooting!

Sounds like that pup is trying to understand what his new people want, but he is young and some pups are a bit slower than others. Good Luck hope this helped.

when i got my puppy i bought a pet porter. i had her house broken in a week. if the dog goes potty in the house, put he/ she in the pet porter. the dog will not potty in the porter because most dogs don't wanna lay in it at least not mine. take the dog outside, when potty in the house put in porter. just keep doing this until he/she is house broken. worked for me. good luck!!! oh make sure the pet porter is only big enough to turn around it. you don't want the porter to be not too small , not too big ok.

get a cage every time it goes in the house put it in the cage for a little while that's how I broke mine from potting in the house and chewing on things.
