Stainless steel is very expensive as a construction material, but the people buying beach houses can usually afford it.

However... it is usually a coating of Zinc that is added to "galvanize" steel, to make it corrosion resistant.

In addition to the intital corrosion resistance given to the steel, cathodic protection (electric current) *may* be applied to the structure to provide corrosion PROOFing. The zinc is sacrificed over time, and may be recoated when it is mostly corroded away. Cathodic protected galvanized steel is generally only used on large public structures, like bridges.
