It applies in another way as well.
Pavlov was frequently disappointed when many of his dogs refused to cooperate with the experiment. He was only able to prove his point statistically.
Skinner had the same problem with his rats. Some of them displayed free will.

Depends on the religion, and the denomination or sect of that particular religion. Mine, however, is not representative of Pavlovian response. If it was, I wouldn't participate. I took psychology, I know what Pavlov is about. I don't want a religion to pull my strings. Only God can do that.

Maybe I'm missing something, but Pavlov is real, the dog was real, the food was real and the bell was real. The experiment couldn't have worked if any of those variables had been imaginary.
Then when the dog was trained, the treats were unnecessary. So I'm not sure what part of religion the treats would represent. Blessings? Why would they cease to be real? I don't believe God participates in a bait and switch, if that's what you mean.

In my life it is not the case. I never used to have any religious habits, I hardly went to the church. I read the Bible, some..did not quite understand it.
However, things have changed for me the second time around. Still I would not compare it to Pavlovian response. I make a choice every day to follow Jesus, and that choice is mine to make...and my serving style is different every day. : )

I'm spiritual and I still can see a lot of Pavlovian (trained) response in church. Habit and emotion weigh heavy and are intoxicating.

Some of it. In Jesus camp, whenever an adult says 'Satan', you can see all the kids flinching. However, I don't think it's wise to attribute all of religion to simple learned responses.
