There is more than one W Hotel in New York. If you are lucky, you are staying at the one near Union Square. You're not far from Lombardi's on Spring Street in Soho. I think Lombardi's has the best pizza in Manhattan and it was the first pizza place in New York, possibly the first one in the United States.

Good pizza by the slice - Stromboli on St Mark's Place and 1st Avenue.
(There are probably a hundred pizza places in the East Village)

You can get excellent pizza at Una Pizza Napoletana on East 12th Street between First and Second Avenue. The service is awful, the place gets crowded and you have to buy a whole pie, they don't sell pizza by the slice - but, it's really good (expensive) pizza.

If you're at the W in Times Square, good pizza by the slice is at Ninth Avenue Pizzeria on Ninth Avenue and 52nd Street.

Excellent pizza - you have to get the entire pie at Angelo's on West 57th between 6th and 76th Avenues

You also can go to John's on 44th Street and Eighth Avenue. Whole pie only - it's very crowded, but it's very big - it used to be a church - pretty place - stained glass windows and all.
They get more tourists than natives here.

The pizza in Brooklyn is much better than anything Manhattan has to offer - and, it's half the price.
In Brooklyn: DiFara's on Avenue J and East 14th Street in Midwood; Totonno's on Neptune Avenue and 15th Street in Coney Island; Franny's on Flatbush Avenue and Prospect Place; L&B Spumoni Gardens on 86th Street in Bensonhurst; Nonna's (grandmother's) pie at Lenny's on 86th Street in Bensonhurst (still in business - the opening of Saturday Night Fever - John Travolta with a bucket of paint gets his pizza at Lenny's); Nonna pie at Papa's Pizza on Fifth Avenue and 83rd Street in Bay Ridge - (Grandmother's pie has extra thin, extra crispy crust); Elegante on Fifth Avenue and 69th Street in Bay Ridge
If you really love pizza, you might be interested in the Brooklyn Pizza tour - you get to eat at Patsy Grimaldi's and L&B Spumoni Gardens. You'll see a lot of Brooklyn - I don't know what other stops they make, but they go through various neighborhoods in Brooklyn and tell you a lot of history.

Try some New York restaurants while you're here; don't live on pizza all week. Have a great time

Additional: There is a pizza place about half a block from your hotel, so you can get your pizza fix immediately: It's called La Bellezza and it's on East 49th Street between Lexington and Third Avenue. You can get pizza by the slice.

I don't know about the other people here, but I was born and raised in NYC and L-O-V-E pizza. If you want a typical slice of "Real NYC Pizza", you are looking for a slice. Real NYC pizza is not a fine dining experience, but instead is really wonderful pedestrian food. You grab a slice and maybe walk with it (if you're not concerned about dripping orange-colored grease on your clothing - lol).

Your nose will be your guide here. You want to smell garlic and tomato sauce and freshly baking bread all mixing together as you walk by.

My sisters and I swear by Sal's Pizzeria - 2671 Broadway, New York, 10025 - (212) 663-7651 (between 101st & 102nd streets). It is actually worth the trip up to the Upper West Side and this will also give you a chance to see a more residential part of NYC. It might be a great stop after a trip to Central Park or the Museum of Natural History.

Enjoy your trip!

You are really looking to start a war between New Yorkers by asking this question! We could debate about this forever. But since you said "old style" I am assuming you mean Margarita Pizza which has fresh mozzarella, plum tomato sauce, basil and grated cheese on it. It doesn't get any older than Lombardi's, and Grimaldi's. They are both made in coal burning brick ovens which are illegal to build in the city due to environmental issues. So these pizzeria's are hard to come by. Beware though because they are also very touristy and you will wait a while to get in. In my opinion Grimaldi's which is in Brooklyn is better than Lombardi's. The crust is thin, the sauce is sweet and the cheese is amazing. My recommendation would be to go in the middle of the week so you don't have to wait on line. Pizza 33 on 33rd st and 3rd avenue has an excellent Margarita Pizza. Johns of Greenwich Village, Patsy's of Harlem also have these style pizza's but my recommendation would be Grimaldi's. I work in a pizzeria and prefer their pizza to the place I work at. But in all honesty even bad NYC pizza is far better than pizza from anywhere else in the country. So you really cant lose. Enjoy your trip to the city. The person above recommended Stromboli's, their pizza sucks!

I can't think of one specifically, there are so many good ones. Obviously don't go to one of the gross chain American pizza places such as Domino's, Pizza Hut, or Little Ceasar's. You could just ask someone when you get out there and I am sure that they will be able to point you into the right direction of somewhere convenient.

Try Arturo's on Houston near Laguardia Place or John's on Bleeker Street in the Village. They both have been around for years.
